MI-8 Auto pilot.... i think im going to cry.
So i can fly the Mi-8 pretty well (as in take off shoot something and then land). But every now and again i get a kick into reality when my Heli will just pitch up 90 degrees out of nowhere and my Yaw will just go full right.

When i disengage the auto pilot it wont go back.... am i doing something wrong?

I dont know about the random pitching but the reason you cant turn autopilot back on is probably due to a generator failure, are you perhaps pulling collective too fast?

I'm pretty new to the Mi-8, but I've found if I'm not trimmed out, and then release the stick when I have a lot of forward momentum the chopper will violently pitch up as if doing a cobra maneuver. Once in this flight envelop even holding the cyclic full forward will not stop it. Not quickly anyway.

If you're experiencing strange flight characteristics you can't explain you may need to reset your trim.

hey dude this is EXACTLY what happens too me but it also does it randomly. Even if i have all the auto pilots on and i have trimmed it out perfectly even after 5 minutes it will do it even if i havent touched the stick.... but you are right, it does happen to me more when i am just moving forward dodging mountains for dodging small arms

I have never seen this happen before, if either of you can, try to record a video of it happening.

A trim reset (Lcontrol + T) or manual AP trim (knobs) didn't fix this?
Vernibob Jul 7, 2016 @ 3:09pm
Well i just did a flight on a server not long ago and too be honest i think its when the auto pilot thinks im being a little risky.

i was doing almost 300km going down a mountain and straight away it pitched up about 60degrees to slow me down and all i did is nudge the stick back a teebny bit..

But like i said a bit earlier it has happened in stable flight, or more annoyingly when i am trying to gain altitude whilst going slow. Going up a mountain for example. It will do it around 3 or 4 times in a row.

Like the gent said above, ill try and re create the conditions and post a vid. it might take me a few days but if you guys are still offering to help it will be great to find out if its me being stupid.

My KA50 is trying to kill me...
I chalk it up to not understanding the instruments correctly, or possibly my Saitek Joy+Yoke being old with strange input glitches, although i can't replicate similar things on the Config test...
That said, if you're doing significant speed forward while angled down and no trim, and take control away from stick (back to neutral) I'm pretty sure the drag force on the rear of the blade surface and tail of the craft (part that is pitched up) should be force down, no?..

In level flight and with/out trim this seems to be more of an issue to consider though...

I fly the Ka-50 Black Shark since it first came out back in 2008 and it has superb handling and once one understands how the Autopilot and Trim functions on it, it's very easy to fly and hover.

Hey man,

Thanks for getting back to me but i dont think that is it. Plus i think the tail section doesnt really have that much drag or lift to effect the aircraft that much, i mean its a 60-80 degree pitch up. Also the aircraft is trimmed.

Sounds like you need to watch this about trim and autopilot modes in Ka-50:

If i may contribute, did you check your airspeed? because helicopters have Retreating Blad Stall (RBS) when going too fast. This also depends on altitude and it happens from 300kph or even lower the higher the altitude. Does it vibrate before you suddenly pitch up? What i think happens is you get into RBS and because of the rotor stall, the generators cut out, you can hear this in cockpit with a twine or some electronic sound from your inverters. This can cause the autopilot to shut off and you need to manually turn it on again. I've encountered this in high altitude flights while trying to get to the top of elbrus and it has really taught me to watch for the signs. Hope this helps...

Hey dude, thanks for chipping in but as i said before i really doubt its RBS. I tried to make a video of it happening and i went to the exact same conditions as it was before and i couldnt get it to do it again.

when i finally decided to ocme to the forum with it i was about 500m up trying to fly over a hill at around 220kph-ish...
