Confusing chat key commands
Anyone know what they mean? Lots of them contradict or make little sense to me. Forums are dead, but heres my reference post. MiG-21, BF109 K-4, and General.

The MiG is made by a third party developer who uses their own style of control naming and key assignment where as the Bf-109K-4 is made by ED.

Aye, the 109 still seemed to conflict with the General settings. Upon reading another thread I'm going to change my keys, *Restart* then see if the buttons work. I don't really have much faith in it but we'll see I guess. If anyone has advice on what each button means from EDs side and maybe leathernecks too, thatd be nice.

It would be easier to understand what you are having problems with if you provided an example.

Shift+tab is to open chat, I misunderstood your question.

might not be forums are dead they might just not understand what issue your having like here :P

The keybinds A. Dont really explain what they do very well at all.
B. Upon some more looking into it, the BF109 K-4 has two keybinds listed that are similarly written yet function MUCH different from eachother despite that. (one opens the chat with no all chat typing function, despite saying "Multiplayer chat - All" and "Multiplayer chat - Allied" works as you'd expect; by opening allied typing.
C. The MiG-21 has no key for going to all-chat. It's literally unbindable and doesn't exist from what I've seen. It just offers show-hide and allied chat, iirc. I'd need to open it again to check. As far as I've found out, easily using all chat without moving my mouse over the dialogue box to type and clicking the switcher (all while piloting a russian jet interceptor, holding positive or neutral Gs, and preparing to type all at once is rather daunting.) rather than just hitting a key and getting started.

I hope that clears it up im very tired, i put in a bug ticket to leatherneck upon realizing what was up with issue C.

Also, default controls seem to not only work because of planes overriding "general" section, but shift tab isnt an option because I use it for steam overlay. I don't consider disabling steam overlay a fix or a bandaid anyways. removing functionality to gain one is eh, if it even worked.

That is why 99% of all DCS players use voice comms in multiplayer. ;)

I don't have the MiG-21 installed in either 1.5 or 2.0 right now but all other planes have the following mapping:

Multiplayer chat - mode all: Tab
Mulitplayer chat - mode allies: LCtrl+Tab
Mulitplayer chat - read/write all: LShift+Tab

When looking at an old keyboard mapping chart for the MiG-21 it should have the same layout:

Multiplayer chat - mode all: Tab
Multiplayer chat - mode allies: LCtrl+Tab

I can't find the "read/write all" (whatever that means) option though.

EDIT: You can hardly blame DCS if you insist on using the default mapping for the Steam overlay. DCS wasn't designed with Steam in mind. With your logic I shouldn't use TrackIR since the default mapping of the basic TiR features conflict with the default DCS layout.

No, with my logic you should be able to remap it to whatever you please as an easy way around the issue instead of be forced to disable something that is literally taking up ONE keybind. Which is impossible as it stands because even if it worked, it wouldn't work with the MiG, which is the issue.

I'm not going to use voice comms in a public free flight server where maybe one or two server owners might be hanging out while 90% of the server users use typing chat otherwise for smalltalk, I think this is a very reasonable complaint, and what you've basically said amounts to "put a bandaid on this stitchneeding wound". I shouldn't have to disable working features just to get some bugged feature that's not working right in the first place, seeing as the issue isn't with Steam overlay anyways, it's with Leathernecks lack of keybinds.

Sorry if I'm coming off kind of strongly. These are the exact replies I was expecting and didn't want to hear because they aren't right, and I sort of already found my issue as mentioned earlier; a lack of keybind. It wasn't an issue pre-1.5 because of the way chat worked, but now its an issue because they redid the chat to work differently.

Not sure if it is a bug or a feature, but in the MiG-21 you need to open the "team window" (LCtrl+Tab) before you can change chat modes as mentioned above. The text chat is defintatly working though. Installed the 21 and tested it in both 1.5 and 2.0.

So to answer your question: The MiG-21 has the same key for going to "ALL" as the rest of the modules - the Tab key. The minor quirk is that you have to click LCtrl+Tab before it works. Note that the MiG-21 IS different in terms of keyboard layout compared to all other modules. This applies to landing gear operation and mouse look on/off etc as well. So the "quirk" is quite possibly a feature.

EDIT: Just tested and I could re-map these commands to my HOTAS throttle. So that is also working just as intended. You just can't map it while in multiplayer. It has to be done from singleplayer or the main menu.

Yes, I can open the team window, its rebinded but it works fine, but in order to change the modes I have to tediously move my mouse across the screen each and every time I need to type in chat, which is unrelated to any preexisting keybinds, this seems to be the only plane missing the functionality to immediately press a key that goes to all chat, judging by your input. I don't know if it should be considered a feature, but more of an overlook, as it's bad if something unrelated to the simulation experience is being gimped like the chat UI that all other planes have easily to use.

On another note, you can probably see what I meant about the 109 having odd naming too if youre on 1.5

I kind of skimmed this, can you tell me what your tab is mapped to on both the 21 and general settings?

Just to confirm, when I say "all chat" I mean "type to all" instantly like we can instantly get "type to allies" , not just opening up the text chat from the envelope.

Also I'm going to bed so any reply after this will be slow, thanks for your help

This is my default chat key mappings in the MiG-21bis:

By double-clicking either the default keyboard command or assigning it to one of one of my peripherals I can map it (with our without modifiers) as I see fit:

As far as I know the "Multiplayer chat - mode all" lets you communicate with everyone on the server. The 109 K-4 has exactly the same default keys for multiplayer chat as the rest of the modules (I own all except the L-39 and F-5). The only one differing is the MiG-21 since it doesn't have the "Multiplayer chat read/write all" option.

Once I have opened the "team window" (LCtrl+Tab) I can use the keyboard shortcuts to switch between ALL and ALLIED in the 21 as well as in all the other modules I have checked without having to use the mouse.

Text chat for both the 109 and MiG-21 is working fine. Just checked. But I was wrong earlier since LCtrl+Tab is needed to open the dialogue window in the 109 (and the rest of the planes) as well. LShift+Tab switches between ALL and ALLIES. Just watch what direction the little yellow marker is pointed. You can use the mouse to switch as well if you want by simply clicking either ALL or ALLIES. Tab brings up previous text on screen. If you haven't typed anything just pressing Tab does nothing.

Here it is set to ALLIES:

And here it is set to ALL:

To be honest I can't really see how this could be any easier. I have never used text chat in DCS but it took me less than 2 minutes to figure out what was going on. You are making things harder than they are here...

you are in a 109, not a 21. get in a 21 and tell me you can move from allied to all without using your mouse.

There is no key that toggles between all and allied for me in the 21 , it just opens up the chat, then allows for allied typing. for all I have to manually move and click every time.
