ok just found out about the Pixel density in the settings, it's a bit better when not zooming, but if I want to read the tiny texts on my sides, I either need to move my head close to them, or close one eye when doing vr zoom

What headset you got? Resolution can play a big part in this. Knowing you VR devices limit will help to know what to expect best case.

One of the joys of VR (to me) is the ability to easily move closer to small text in order to read it. A zoom function is no longer necessary.

It's odd to hear complaints about Virtual Reality not being good at things that are impossible in reality. I'd think that zooming a VR user's view would be an instant immersion breaker.

Oculus Rift S

That's probably as good as you are going to get I'm afraid.

I used to have one and it is a fantastic headset for games such as RoboRecall etc, but as soon as you need that touch more fidelity they hit their limit.

Your problem is the reason I upgraded to a Reverb G2 - some aircraft are better than others though - the F/A-18C was manageable, but the F-14 for example was horrible. Could hardly make out any dials without having to lean in (airspeed dial for example)

The main issue with the F/A-18C was (as you have said) the writing on the side panel switches.

Also, your need to close one eye is probably because you cannot adjust the IPD on the Rift S unfortunately - so I suspect you are suffering because of both problems / hardware limits.

IPD? the lens setting?
what about the hardware limits?
HoboCop Jun 27, 2022 @ 2:30am
IPD: interpupillary distance - the physical distance between your pupils. This cannot be changed on the Rift S. It is a physical adjustment that is possible on some devices, but is missing on the hardware / device of the Rift S. If your eyes do not happen to match the device then you are out of luck. Your need to close one eye to get a clearer view in some situations describes a possibly incorrect IPD.

Hardware limitations: IPD (already mentioned) cannot be adjusted on the headset and screen resolution of the headset is the other limitation which can make text and small details hard to read / see. There is nothing you can do to alter these.

There is a software IPD setting on the Rift S, but this does not physically move the lenses, so it makes it near on useless.

ok I see, thank you for the explanation

OGr,

There are a couple of things that are not clear in your description of what has been done to help with text.

* There is a setting in DCS for what resolution the Cockpit (only) is displayed at. For my installation, it was set very low and my text was pretty unreadable when zoomed in using DCS view options. Changing it to be closer to my monitor capability made a huge difference.

* When you talk about VR zooming in, are you using the VR image magnification feature, or are you unlocking the cockpit view and using DCS to zoom in? If you are using the VR zoom, I would suggest using DCS to zoom. There are a number of different ways to view the cockpit that can be assigned to KBD/Mouse/Joy/Throttle buttons. There is one set specifically designed to move around the cockpit controls so they can be used directly.

Good Hunting

hi,
I've set the cockpit resolution to 1024, default was 524 or something like that, about the zoom, I'm using the DCS vr zoom feature, is there any other zoom in VR on DCS except this one? because it's a huge zoom

Yes.

OGr,

Not sure how the VR zoom works in relation to DCS. Are you familiar with unlocking the cursor and using the mouse to move around the cockpit and zoom in and out? Is that the same effect as using what your are referring to as 'VR zoom'?

At 1024 cockpit resolution, the text should be crystal clear when zoomed in. The only reason I can think of why it is blurry when using the 'VR zoom' is that is just blowing up the current VR image, which is different than what DCS does when you unlock the cursor and zoom in with the mouse.

Is it still blurry when you unlock the cursor and zoom in with the mouse while NOT using VR headset?

You cannot do this in VR afaik.

The blurry text is purely the headset resolution. I can honestly speak from experience with a Rift S and having had the same problems (except from the one eye thing - that sounds like an incorrect IPD symtpom).

can the oculus rift S correct that IPD problem?

no. It's fixed. You cannot move the lenses. The software can alter the IPD slightly but because the lenses do not move (it's a single screen rather than one per lens) it makes almost zero difference.
