VR visors...does it worth?
HI all,

currently I use track ir to play flight simulators and in DCS ones. I was thinking about getting Oculus or Vive...I know that they are limited in screen resolution, even if Vive now is improoved...so my question is if it really worth to upgrade my track ir with a VR visor or not. I got FC, Huey, Black Shark and P-51 and Spitfire with WW2 asset and Normady map...my PC has enought power to hande a VR visor but i'm not quite convinced about the VR graphic low resolutions

Thanks!

I started playing with a DIY head tracker, and then switched to Oculus. I do believe it is worth it, the inmersive experience it is just amazing.

But keep in mind, as you said, that resolution is limited. This is even more important if don't have a perfect vision or wear contact lenses. I have some astigmatism and I have troubles reading some of the screens on the A10C or Harrier displays. Nothing too problematic, but still it is not as clean as it was at max graphics in a regular screen.
It worth but CV1 and HTC vive is 2 years old.
Maybe wait next yeart then you got brand new video card and 4K VR?
Who knows.

4K VR is still a long ways off. Vive just released a headset with slightly better optics, but it's a ripoff at $800 and no other components (That will cost you an additional $500) to even complete a VR system. If you have an old Vive, your existing hardware should work with it. Pimax looks like Vaporware to me, I don't think it will be released anytime soon and if it does, it's going to be a steaming pile of dog sh*t.

The new line of GPUs are going to make a huge difference, but even they won't be capable of pushing 4k. The new HMDs are also likely to incorporate eye tracking which will allow the GPU to focus on where your eye is looking and apparently they will be able to get more out of a GPU because of this. Time will tell....
I bought a cheap chinese 4K VR year ago(crowdfunding pre-order). As a cheap ass ♥♥♥♥♥ myself, me even did not belive that quality they have made. After the first month trial. I refund it as fast as possile. I made a review at ed forum. But it was 4K for sure. Just an awlful design.
There is a little tech or engneer way to achive 4K that is upscale. We only have to get rid of screen door. Not get retina detail.
And that company pimax raised an another crowdfunding project.

I dun know what thay are able to achive this time.
If it stays cool this time i may give it a try. Give that company second chance.
Definitely no pre-order this time.

I had the ocolus and now i have the Pimax 4k and will buy the pimax 8k with controllers and base stations sensors when avaliable.

My experience.
If you ONLY want to use VR in flight sims and dont care about controllers, then buy the Pimax 4k its really good.

With pimax compared to ocolus you have much better vision due to quality and you can also see further in the distance..
You also feel less seasick ( vr sick ) when rolling your plane since the pimax show vr in another way. The pimax is also less heavy on your computer since it show vr in another way ( less fps ).

However be aware it will be a nightmare to get the vr headset repaired if it break or have it replaced. You have to send it to china i think.. If you want support then they actual sit ready and can and will remote control your computer to help you.. however if you live in europe og usa you have to sit awake at night to get the help. ).

( ps avoid the Nolo controllers they sell with pimax they are terrible ).

PPS... You do NOT need to buy or use the vive base stations.. that is some small boxes you setup to track your movement... If you only fly in vr then the headset have build in gyro and will know when you turn your head...

TIP... the headset have no microphone, so you need to buy one and glue it to your headset. Oh and the pimax headset uses the vive software and steam to function.. it can also run some ocolus games but you will need a controller to do this.

All in all the pimax4k is the cheap alternative if you only fly/drive or watch VR porn ;-)

PPPS.. if you have issues with turning on the Vr headst do this
To turn on the vr headset turn on the software and then connect power to the vr headset and it turns on ( i had allot of issues turning it on since something is blocked when the software startup )
Anyway the pimax are cheaper than ocolus and 2x the resolution..

Ok...so you confirm that there is a real and lets say huge graphics difference compared to normal screens. This is a thing i expect: lets say that i would use VR only for flight sim, DCS and IL2...sure, great graphics are important...but like falkenbbs said, the thing that attracts me the most is the 1 to 1 head tracking.

Track ir is really a great device...but was wondering what would be to try to do a WW2 dogfight with 1 to 1 head movements...i mean...i really have to look back to see the plane that is chasing you...this should be so awesome...well i suppose...and thats why i asked for advice.

Uhm...i dont need VR controllers because i would use it only for flight sim...so if i chose to give VR a try...i need to chose between Oculus or Vive...i know that there are other VR headsets around...but i'm not that convinced by them.

So is thare a real difference between the two?

Thanks again

Pimax has filter(dark and yellow) and prescription. You have no problem with it? And Can see further than oculus..
The dev said they designed based on -3.0 prescription and 63mm IDP.
Only very narrow range of user who can see the sharpest image on that thing. You are one of them . Dangit..
First gen pimax basclly kick out bunch of players whom have different "eye structure" like me...

Are you are owl? If not. protect your neck. try look back without VR IRL. It's hurt.
If competive dogfight is your fav. VR did not gave you defensive advantage at all.
But may gave you better direction SA.
Well, hopefully the StarVR is still under developement and not canceled product. The Starbreeze should be the the main investor of this project.

Or how about some ultrawide display?

I've tried DCS in Oculus few days ago. It is interesting experience.
Yes, I got the motion sickness but only when I was rolling. Nothing when I was pitching or turning.
The resolution was quite bad and I had the problem with the "double vision" of HUD. I always had to look out, far away and then I finally saw the HUD like I should. The reason is simple. The true HUD projects the data quite far away. I am not sure but it should be around 100m in front of the aircraft nose.
The last problem I had was the height and distance estimation from the runway. I had problems to recognise how much above the runway I was.
The VR controllers were good enough for me.
P.S. It was my first VR experience ever.

As usual, I'm surprised no one speaks about WMR headset... I have a Lenovo and it's a huge asset for sims... Though I've never tried another headset, but I got mine for 250€ and very happy about it.
I've heard some good things about the Samsung Odyssey from a friend who owns the Oculus (CV2?). He said it's not a next gen headset, but more of a 1.5. It's better than what we have, but not really worth the upgrade if you already have a nice VR headset, since it's only slightly clearer and slightly better all around. That being said, it costs $400 which for VR seems pretty cheap which definitely makes it a contender for a starting HMD.
