DCS World Steam Edition

What do you guys think of peripherals?
So I was just browsing the "Official Forums" (tm) when I noticed something in one guy's boastful signature with their specs, mods, and pets they've listed.

Namely this thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6WY6ks2wpA

What exotic peripherals do you use except the obvious HOTAS and Tracker? And does anyone actually have this uhh... "Force Feedback Cushion"?

Chairs? Massage FF cushions? Coffee cups? HMCS? I want to know especially about the first two, as in sim chairs and you have on them, cause playing on a normal kitchen table feels like flying An-2 with Hornet MFDs. Also, do you have extra throttle quadrants for multi-engine WW2 aircraft, additional displays?

A lot of people say pedals are game changer when it comes to helicopters and propeller planes, because it allows much greater precision than sitck's Z axis.
I only use stick with slider and keyboard, maybe I'll buy trackir some day :P
I guess I should have titled it “what exotic peripherals do you use”.
Other than the my HOTAS itself, have a couple of Logitech throttle quadrants that I mostly use for WWII stuff in DCS, IL-2, and Rise of Flight. I also tend to use the quadrants a lot with FS2020 because they tend to make more sense than a full HOTAS when flying VFR flights in Cessna's and Cubs.

The other thing I tend to consider a peripheral (at least in that context) is my laptop. It is always handy having all my checklists, manuals, and even flight plan tools in one handy place.
Oh, I need those. Starting IL-2 campaigns. Can you recommend one?

This: https://www.logitechg.com/ru-ru/products/flight/flight-simulator-throttle-quadrant.html ?

Can you remove the screw at the back, so that you could just put it on the table, instead of fixing it to one?

For extra support I have my iPad for checklists and manuals.

I spent around 5500 on a full sim rig setup for flight. All virpil products besides the peddles which are vkb. Odesssy VR and track ir with tripple screens on the way.

Went with a sim labs px-1 for the chassis.
I am bordering on 1500-2000 now, but one screen is enough. All I need is a chair and maybe that funky massage pad… just ordered the logitech throttle quad.

Gasp!

I have had the greatest idea in the world of sims since last Friday! What if you can buy one of those massage chairs they put in malls and jurry-rig it to a usb thingy, connected to joystick FF/audio channel and have yourself a full body feedback?

I mean, if you're getting that into it... I'd point out that a lot of movie theatres were having trouble surviving the pandemic capacity limits and there might be 3d-motion seats slipping onto the liquidation markets.

I use to have a gametrix seat and it worked very well, but I eventually broke it with over use.
I now have bass transducers screwed to my seat and helps with the feeling of flight, just having some feedback helps, especially with helicopters.
Ah yes, DIY Force-Feedback.

Speaking of FF in general, I remember when they made gaming headphones with two weights that would go on your neck at the back, and fold upward when not in use, Sennheiser I think made those in 2004/2005. They would vibrate when bass would come through and the mic boom hid in this niche, so you wouldn't look like an ass going outside and just listening to tunes. Not only did they look cool, they actually worked. I bought two pairs (cause they were so loud, I used them as speakers on the boat… until it capsized and me and my friend took a swim with our phones and these headphones died due to being soaked in the waters of Pacific, so I bought another pair).

It’s good to hear from someone who actually used one, thanks Bignewy. You mean you actually screwed subwoofers to your seat and turned up the volume?

I have winwing Tauris Thorttle quadrant, Winwing Libra stick with extender, Winwing take off and combat panel, G2 VR headset, Simshaker pad, and working on a spitfire stick, but can't get it to work.

One thing most ppl forget: You won´t fly any better when you have more expensive peripherals. So before you aren´t able to "hover that hind" with your crappy X45, you shouldn´t buy a Virpil Collective :)

Well, up to a point. There is a law of diminishing returns but I must admit that there is a point where better gear DOES make it a lot easier to fly.

Aerial refueling with my VKB NXT stick is a breeze compared to my Saitek X52 or Thrustmaster T16000. Not having to use modifiers or keyboard inputs during flight with a more elaborate HOTAS set also makes plane management a lot easier. Having a separate throttle gives so much more control than a small slider that formation flight becomes fun and natural instead of a constant effort.

Skill plays a massive role, sure. But if your flight stick is exceptionally crappy then a TPOD-designated LGB bomb run could be super frustratibg and aerial refueling or bad-weather-landings could be borderline impossible.

I think if you have full control of the vehicle as intended, then you are up to skill, if not -- your skill must be multipied by your equipment, with multiplier being less than 1.

I can't get over how cool this "subwoofers fixed to a chair" thing sounds.

It makes me think of only one thing.
