I own the "Hog" hotas.
If you want a smooth fluid axis, then personally the actual hog stick (well, the base for it) is awful. I kept the throttle and grip and replaced the "gimbal" with a Virpil WarBRD.
I would honestly look at Virpil first. The axis on the WarBRD base is super smooth and will outlast the base of the warthog by a LONG LONG time!!!
The Hog throttle is "ok" and works really well except for the TDC axis, which is unusable and need modding. I did this too.
If you do not mind modding the TDC on the hog throttle then I would recommend it. Then get an F18 grip from Thrustmaster and stick that on a Virpil WarBRD base. Job done.
Then go and get some peddles. I can highly recommend the Thrustmaster Pundular ones.
Get the Winwing Orion set instead if at all possible. It has superior internals and comes with Hornet-style controls out of the box.

The Warthog is not as "bad" as many will make out. indeed, I like mine and still have it, although it gets less and less use as the Virpil set.
The virpil is no where near as solid and sexy feeling but it is (on the whole) "better".
for feel and looks I adore my Hog but to play? it's Virpil all the way.
