Are there free planes?
Can you play many vehicles/planes without spending hundreds of dollars?

EDIT: Now that its confirmed there are many free vehicles, I would appreciate if it someone that was familiar enough with them , could present a general idea how many :)
Thank you for posting on topic, and a reminder of our community guide lines.

DCS World is a game / simulation, it is free to play, two free aircraft and a free terrain, we have another free terrain on the way.

there are many free community mods that can be used.

but everything else is a DLC paid product. You dont need to own them all, you dont need to own any, you can still enjoy dcs with the free content.

If you decide to buy a dlc choose one that interests you and spend years mastering it like a real pilot would.

enjoy!

Are there any free multirole aircraft?

Are there any free multirole aircraft?

As stated in this thread, the Su-25T (a CAS/anti-tank focused aircraft) and the TF-51 (an unarmed version of the P-51D Mustang) are the only free aircraft modules included in DCS World. There are some free, community made mods as well but since the mod teams don't have access to the same toolsets and resources that third party developers or Eagle Dynamics themselves have, one's expectations should be managed accordingly.

The only true modern multi-role aircraft modules in DCS are the F-16, JF-17, and F/A-18C. All of them are payed modules.

Ok, well how nice is the community in general?

If I do PvP will I just get constantly blown out of the sky by people with other aircraft?

Honestly? PvP is going to be tough regardless of where you go because there are always going to be players that spend pretty much their entire DCS time in PvP and get very, very good at the specific "meta" of it. That is going to be a problem in every online PvP multiplayer experience and there isn't much of a way to get around it.

My suggestion? Try to find PvE focused servers first and foremost. You won't really learn anything very well if you just hop into PvP and get shot down over and over to the point of frustration.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the free aircraft (at least the only armed one) isn't really meant for air to air and nor is it really meant to be put in scenarios where air to air threats are out to get it. There are going to be specific aircraft in DCS that won't work well on some of the larger public servers because their roles are rather specific. This is a natural result of trying to shoehorn a "one size fits all" public server experience into a more realistic simulation sandbox.

Just want to add one thing. This game differs from other games because it simulates military planes as close to their realistic representations as possible. So I want to give you a little advice. It is up to you to take it or not, but honestly I think that the best way to start with a new plane in this game is just to read its manuals and create your own missions in "Mission editor" and practice. Just study in a peaceful environment and you will get much more from these studies than jumping into PvP. When you will know at least some basics you can find people that can teach you some advanced stuff, like flying formation, aerial refueling, anti-missile maneuvers e.t.c.. By the way, you can learn all of this stuff by yourself as well.

As for PvP there is all kind of people can be there.

Ok different question then... Are there any PvP servers that restrict aircraft to just the free aircraft and free mods?

A PvP server with only SU25's for example would be interesting, as everyone has that plane so there's no paid advantages, etc.

Not that I know of. As I said before, the Su-25T is 100% a ground attack aircraft with only a very limited defensive air to air capability. If someone were to make a public server devoted to the Su-25T, it would more than likely be PvE against AI ground targets because that is where the Su-25T is actually effective.
Messaggio originale di razoleg (The Cunning Fox):
It’s not THAT bad. You can shoot down A10s and helis and older crsft just fine. It can easily take on a Viggen.

Only if that Viggen pilot makes a lot of very, very silly mistakes.
Most of the servers that host the free planes cater to PVE, as shooting down enemy planes takes quite a bit of practice and training. (Those who do that generally have a module or 2) Although the SU-25T can shoot down planes (I have a few kills with it), the plane itself is just not designed for air combat.

In my opinion the A-4 (free mod) is more suited than the 25T, it is lighter, has a better thrust-to-weight ratio, faster, and is more maneuverable. This is provided that the server restricts aircraft to korean and maybe vietnam era aircraft. (Mig-15/19, F-5)

(The A-4 is an attacker, not a dedicated fighter, so against dedicated fighters it would be an uphill battle. But at least you won't get blasted out of the sky by someone you can't even see whilst they do Mach 1 circles around you in an F-16)

The f-15 will give you the cheapest plane that can go up against pretty much everything that flies in DCS, so in terms of meta, that would be your best bet. During sales it's around $10 or so.
(It uses a simplified model, so you won't get a clickable cockpit and/or deep system interaction like with the others)

Good to know the servers hosting free planes are PvE! :)

If only I could get Proton working on DCS so I could run it. :(
I guess I'll just have to go back to fking Windows 10 with all it's trashy updates and nasty telemetry.

I dual boot, it's just too much to get many online games to work properly in Linux.

One thing, make sure you are on the BETA branch. That's where all the action is.
