There's no grinding to earn planes. The 2 free planes are more of a demo of the sim.
Im not sure what this says about the game.
It's says that you lack reading comprehension. There are 2 free planes that come with the game. There are some free mods that may or may not work now or in the future because, like any mod, they're done by people in their free time.
2 (two) free (frē) planes (things with wings and engines that can defy gravity by generating enough lift through Bernoulli's principle).
dying of old age would be faster than learning to use every vehicles of DCS.
You have windows on your pc but you don't complain that you have to buy software to run on that platform or that you should get all the software for free to run on it.
The Simulator Community i think in general is tired of ppl comparing Arcade Games and the ususal "grind to get more vehicles" (WarThunder, etc.) with actual Simulations where you pay for ONE plane to master it.
Not that you are one of those, just noticing how this question might imply this for some people...
Anyways, i think that´s the wrong approach for many players do actually come from Arcade, looking for "more". Your initial question on how many free planes there are seems to be answered quite elaborately, feel free to try them all :)
Even if you have a hundreds or millions of dollars, you won't be able to play all the planes in the game even if you buy them all. Each plane in this game behaves like a real plane in real life. So to fly different planes you have to learn all of their instruments. It is not like in arcade game where you can click a couple of buttons to start the plane and then fly it with "W, A, S, D" buttons. This game simulates a real life things. You have to seat and read the manuals, then create missions for yourself to practice, continue with the manuals, more mission creation for practice and so on. It is almost like to be a real pilot. In real life, real pilots fly 1 - 4 planes and thats all. More than this, they starting to forget how to fly one of these 4 planes if they haven't flied it for a long time.
So your approach to this game is wrong. This is not "Warthunder", this is not "Ace combat", you don't need 12 planes to be happy with the game. You can buy only one plane and spend 1000+ hours to learn and master it. And I'm not kidding 1000+ hours just for one plane.
As for free planes that comes with the game. There is a TF-51D that is a high fidelity plane that have a realistic flight model and fully simulated systems (clickable cockpits) and there is a Su-25T which is a low fidelity plane with realistic flight model but simplified systems (non - clickable cockpit).
By the way you can get additionall 9 low fidelity planes for reasonable price if you buy a "Flaming cliffs 3" DLC. This DLC contains "A-10A", "F-15C", "Su-25", "Su-27", "Su-33", "MiG-29A", "MiG-29G (Export variant for Germany)", "MiG-29S" and "J-11A (Licensed chinese variant of Su-27 that can use R-77 missiles).
All of these planes have realistic flight model but simplified systems which are much easier to manage. If you want to start with the simulator, these planes might be interesting for you. Honestly, I played a lot of hours already, but I still like flying the MiG-29S, Su-25 and Su-33. Even that they are low fidelity, these planes are great. But take in account that all of these planes don't have clickable cockpits, so if you look for a deep simulation then just choose one of the high fidelity planes.
DCS World is a game / simulation, it is free to play, two free aircraft and a free terrain, we have another free terrain on the way.
there are many free community mods that can be used.
but everything else is a DLC paid product. You dont need to own them all, you dont need to own any, you can still enjoy dcs with the free content.
If you decide to buy a dlc choose one that interests you and spend years mastering it like a real pilot would.
enjoy!
for answering 2 simple questions and not writing a 2 page off topic essay.
