Why not F-5 ?

I was thinking the same. Although derived from the Talon, an F-5 is not exacly a T-38, however it can be used as an "old fashion" trainer IMHO.
I'll third the F-5 as a trainer. Compared to most of the higher tech planes it's difficult to actually fight in because it's still essentially a budget-priced fighter from the late-1950s with some minor upgrades. While it has a radar the gun sight isn't very accurate even if you're locked and the missiles are mainly rear-aspect. The actual F-5s used by USAF Aggressor squadrons are substantially updated and include, among other things, the radar set intended for the F-20 Tigershark.

It's also a fun plane for just tooling along the main drag in Vegas and generally doing stupid flying-related stuff that doesn't involving making things go boom (unless you mean the sonic kind). It's easy to learn, easy to fly and fairly forgiving considering it's not fly-by-wire.

Considering the current spectrum of aircraft that DCS offers, the F-5's overall capabilities make it a ideal trainer for basic flight and even dogfighting tactics. It won't really help you much when it comes to learning more advanced system management, sensors, or weapons but it is a good way to get a grasp on many of the basic foundations of jet combat.
More love to the F-5 from me. It was my first module and i'm really enjoying the recent campaign for it.

If you learn BFM and ACM on the F-5 doing the same on a more performant plane is a piece of cake.
About basic flight, I think I whould prefer something like the MB-339 or the T-45 for Navy pilots.

C-101 (Module)
T-45 (Free mod)
MB-339 (Free mod, discontinued, some cockpit animations no longer work)

Isn't the F-5 still bugged for some significant systems?
Unless you're interested in COIN and Light Attack operations, just jump into whatever interests you. If you are a weirdo like myself who enjoys light attack ops, both are good options. The C-101 does have better options, however.
I have both, I get more fun out of the C-101 however with both I find myself getting hosed in them all the time, lol. Not something well suited in a MP environment where everything goes.

What if I like trainers?
Have you thought about maybe just buying Microsoft Flight Simulator then? I'm not being rude here, I mean this honestly and as sincerely as possible. It's just hard to imagine DCS being fun with a trainer with how limited we are with the maps.

Maybe he like to tain in weapon use too.
Didi MSFS allows weapons employment?

Let me chime in with just one example... L-39 is actively used in the Syrian war by Syria. We have the map for that, the skins, and the country in game. You can make some realistic Syria missions for it. Trainers also double up as active service Light Attack aircraft you know :).

The L-39 is operated by 24 countries that are represented in the Sim, 4 of those countries were active on the maps we have (example, Georgia) and can be realistically (as historically) based at airfields in the Persian Gulf, Syria, and Caucusus maps.
As well as being used in all other Theaters we have maps for, the C101 is also used for 4 countries in the Sim, which include Jordan, in which its in active service, on the Syria map.

One could argue, with your logic, why buy the Viggen when only 1 country ever flew it?, and that country was not active on any of the maps we have.

Even the upcoming MB-339 was active in the Persian Gulf map flying Light attack for UAE.
