Also in my opinion nothing beats the sound of the F404 engines as used in the hornet.
Pros:
- Can do anything
- More complete than the viper
- Carrier ops
- More options in ordnance than viper
- Almost everyone has it, no trouble finding wingman/teacher/tutorials
♥♥♥♥:
- Not any that I can think of
F-16
Pros:
- Better in A2A according to some
- Can carry more maverick missiles
♥♥♥♥:
- No carrier ops
- Not complete. Useable, but there are still plenty of placeholders and stuff
Personally I went with the Viper simply because (1) I didn't really care about carrier ops (2) I watched a couple of videos and decided I liked the idea of the F-16 more
If I had to choose again I would probably go with the Hornet because the few things that are missing on the F-16 break my immersion during startup and system tests on the ground, although it is getting more attention in terms of updates now
- Lower top speed and acceleration than the other modern fighters in the game
- Countermeasure capacity isn't that great when compared to tomcat, flanker, eagle or viper
I'd say that hornet is more dangerous in WVR, but viper is clearly superior in BVR.
Hornet will struggle to reach mach 1.2 with a combat loadout, viper, on the other hand, can do mach 1.4 while carrying 2 external fuel tanks... if the tanks are dropped, it can do mach 1.7+.
At those speeds, the viper's killing zone extends farther than the hornet's, plus defeating incoming amraams becomes much easier.
Viper also has higher acceleration, which enables it to transition between transonic and supersonic flight in a heartbeat, unlike the hornet, which struggles.
Also, nothing beats the viper's cockpit visibility, HUD is the only object obstructing your view.
- Low internal fuel capacity (only ~7140 lbs), which makes external fuel tanks a necessity and gives it shorter range
- Crazy high fuel consumption when afterburner is enabled, unlike the hornet
Depends on which one you like the most and your preferred role.
If you're going to focus on A/A (BVR, that is), viper will give you the edge, thanks to its high speed and acceleration.
Note that the viper is also a pretty capable A/G platform, but it's still not as good as the hornet in that regard.
If you're more interested in A/G (while retaining A/A capability), carrier ops, etc. , then pick the hornet.
While I love the F16 partly for silly patriotic reasons, I'm now mostly flying the F18 as I got the winwing HOATAS syste systems, with long stick between my legs, that doesn't really match the F16 stick and it breaks immersion in VR.
