Standalone DCS World:
- Get all the modules as soon as they are released
- Does not require any extra program to be launched
- Has every single modules available
If you are fine with waiting for most product to be available on Steam and like most of the Steam feature, the Steam version might be for you.
If you own unsupported products such as Upgrades / FC3 or do not care about the Steam functionalities, Standalone DCS World might be for you.
/shrug... if people didn't repeat the same questions, the forums would be dead except for when a new module came out.
Yes, I am wasting my time here for ages because for some reason I want to help to others here. Probably some kind of addiction. If the people were less asking, it would be good for me. :)
Honestly? Steam isn't exactly a bad way to play DCS but the standalone version is better since standalone often gets things a bit faster. You may lose the infrastructure that Steam provides but the DCS launcher handles updating and the like anyway so it isn't a big deal.
The big thing about standalone is the miles program. For players who have been around a long time and have a lot of modules already, it isn't a huge deal but for players who are just starting out or still haven't bought a lot of aircraft, the "miles" points really do add up and help you save a ton of money.
I don't often suggest going outside the steam ecosystem but for DCS, it is worthwhile.
not necessarily. I was having problems with p47 module, uninstalled it right away, and requested refund. APPARENTLY even if module is uninstalled but you still played the core game for 2 hrs since the time of purchase you cant get it. So Im gonna have to contact ED and hope they can help me solve the controller issues im having.
tldr with Steam gotta keep in mind the 2 hr window and not play the game at all untill refund is issued.
After installing the Steam version, attempting to open DCS on Steam has been EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING! The page will just show the installer running, but nothing happens. I had it sit for over a day, just to see if it would ever load and still did not establish a start screen.
Not sure if it is because of Windows 11, Windows Defender, or some other system blocking DCS World on Steam, however all other games and applications on Steam work; just not DCS for some really weird and infuriating reason!!
I understand the conveniency of Steam, but maybe I'm just old school; I prefer to install off a disc with an activation code and configure my windows files/mods separately, when you could mod to infinity in programs such as MSFS-FSX!
Things just seemed SO much simpler then!!!
