Gamepad button names competely unusual
Hey guys,

So I am new to DCS world and after flying for 15 minutes with the keyboard I immediately despised it. I would much rather use my 360 controller. However it has this strange thing where all the buttons have really weird names like "JOY_BTN1" and what not. I have no idea what the heck these buttons are and it is beginning to frustrate me as no one else seems to be having this issue. I need to know the names of the buttons I'm mapping so I can start setting up my controls. Please; any help is appreciated - I want to play this game!

So this is what it looks like:

Yeah I know "just get a joystick" would be a better alternative but that isn't going to happen for a while.

This is the sort of setup I want to go with atm;

I am confused by the issue. "JOY_BTN1" is just the name of the button on your device(gamepad). They will be all numbered. Default assignments don't work in DCS (and would be a terrible time investment for devs).

What you need is a guide, which functions to bind, a pen and a piece of paper & some patience.

From a technical view, as I understand, this naming has to do with windows DirectX buttons/DirectInput and is as it should be.

Is there anywhere I can find the tranlations? Such as "A button = JOY_BTN2"?

The fact that the buttons have these unusual names isn't so much the issue but rather there are no online tutorials or images that translate what these buttons are on the 360 gamepad.

Why not just try them through? How long could that take you? You press button A and know which one it is. Furthermore you don't really need to know that - at all. I have certainly never cared and I bound every DCS module to my HOTAS. ^^

edit: Maybe I have misunderstood the problem completely.^^ Are you saying, when you open the dialogue to change a keybinding, you have to use the dropdown menu to select which button you want to assign? Normally it should simply insert them on button press.

My goodness. I might be the thickest human being to ever walk this earth. I CAN insert them on button press. Oh wow I'm so sorry for wasting your time. God help me when I ever attempt PvP.

Iron Tank, seems I was as thick as you, thanks to this comment finally figured how to map it for the steam deck

That's because DCS:World like most flight simulators uses DirectInput API and not XInput API. DirectInput is much better for games like this because it supports much higher ammount of controllers and axis and buttons per controller. That is also reason why Turtle Beach VelocityOne Flightdeck is compatibile only with PC while their other products are also compatibile with Xbox. Note: I don't recommend Turtle Beach VelocityOne Flightdeck. Its centering mechanism with its heavily non-linear centering force is terrible.
