RX 5700 / 5700 XT
Hi im pretty new to DCS but loving it.

Im looking to upgrade my GPU as i feel it is now the bottle neck in DCS on my system . Im running a R390 ,it runs DCS quite well considering its age. but feel now is the right time to upgrade as the generational gap looks to be worth it.

As i have a freesync monitor i will be sticking with AMD .

Anyone here running the Rx 5700 or the 5700 XT in DCS as these are the cards im interested.

How do they perform in DCS.

Cheers

Ok folks overall im very impressed with it.

been doing a lot of testing. bear in mind my monitor is a 1080 60hz freesync so dont use in game vsync.

Been trying to find the sweet spot as im still not sure what res to use as turning AMD virtual super res on i can get it up to full 4k.

On 1st impressions uninstalled my old driver, put the new card in then used amd auto detect to install drivers. no probs at all .

after install went straight into dcs launched the same testing mission ive been using with my old card. and the same settings. cold start on the ramp at nellis . around 45 fps ........i was like oh. same as what ive was gettting with my old card...... however the card was sat at idle where as my old card was straight to 100 % . seems to take a little while for the card to ramp up and boost. but when it gets going frame rates start to rocket.
here is 3 settings ive settled on so far. and results.

all setting mostly high main.

at 1080 with 2x msaa and 1.5 smaa in game setting my average is 92fps , its looks great really smooth . even over vegas the fps is in the 80s

at 1440 using amd super res and same settings as 1080 with 2x msaa and 1.5 smaa in game
average fps is 65 fps . looks fantastic and is super smooth . fps go up to 70- 80 when out over the desert.

at 4k using amd super res. this time with all in game msaa and smaa turned off it was averaging 77fps. and looks stunning. and smooth.
However ive had a couple of black screen crashes at this setting. some flights have been fine though . not sure if this is where i was messing around with amd overley ,DCS dosnt seem to like getting out of full screen. i was trying to get some screen shots for this post but it dosnt seem to like the amd thing. it maybe a clash with the super res and my monitor i dont really know. but the card is certainly capable at running dcs in 4k with great great results.
i will have to test more at 4k and see.

I think for now im going to stick to 1440.

The card is a sapphire pulse 5700 xt btw. i havnt seen the temps go much over 65c .

So would i recommend this card for DCS. for me yes. coming from a R390 it was a huge leap for me personally. However i cant compare it too anything else in the same performance range like from navidia. so its personal preference.

Overall im very happy with it . And in the long run the drivers are going to get better and so is DCS performance wise with future updates to the graphics engine . So i think the future is very bright for both.

Cheers

Good to hear. So, pardon my ignorance, but you're running a 1080p monitor at 4K, or you have a 4K monitor that you've only been able to run at 1080p? It's scalable at 1440p without distortion?

No my monitor is 1080. it upscales the image to 4k then displays it on a 1080 monitor. From what ive seen theres not much difference between it and a real 4k monitor. As Troll Norris has linked the Nvidia version is called DSR. so maybe you already have it if your current card supports it

Hmm, interesting. How do you run that on an AMD card though? Does GeForce experience work with AMD cards? They're certainly not in the supported list on that site, or is it like FreeSync? I have a 1440p Freesync monitor and a 1070, so 4K isn't really an option anyways in most of the games that I play.

its been around a few years now. I could use it on my old card. But that card couldnt really cope with it.

I'm curious if you're still liking your purchase decision? Any issues/driver problems?

Hi
Yeah im happy with it. Theres been a couple of driver updates since ive had it.
Ive not had issues with crashes due to the card.
Ive still not settled on my settings. I keep switching between 1080 with high in game AA or 2560 res with less AA . But it runs both with nice and smooth .
Its a massive leap over my old card . Suppose it depends what your are upgrading from ?
zappay 22. jan. 2020 kl. 9.50
Just noticed theres another Driver update today. so thats 3 in last month so the support is there .
Randy Lahey 22. jan. 2020 kl. 15.33
Ok, sounds good. What do you mean by 'high' AA? Both types at 4X (I don't remember the highest setting for SSAA). You still have the 1080p monitor correct?
Freakshow 22. jan. 2020 kl. 23.17
That was the thing I played around with before settling on an option.
I, too, have a 1080p monitor, and was trying 1920x1080 @ 4x AA vs AMD VSR 2560x1440 with no AA. I ended up feeling like 1440 looked better and ran better overall, but I'm just on an RX480 8GB.

For me, I wanted my cockpit gauges to be 100% smooth with not one hint of aliasing. The performance was nearly the same between the two settings on my end. Of course, you're getting higher fps than me so you have more fps to gain/lose. When you're like me and tinkering around and deciding between 42fps or 45fps at a FARP in the woods, the performance difference just wasn't that noticeable.

What are the pros and cons for you? I like the idea of just going with the VSR. Anti-aliasing is somewhat increasing resolution in the areas where aliasing is found. But, yeah, how is the performance between 1080 @ 4x or 8x AA vs 1440 @ 2x or no AA on your end with that set up?

5700XT is a very good card, no doubts there. The only caveat I would add, is if you plan on taking up VR at any point with your newly chosen card, because the nVidia RTX cards have so far proven to be better in VR with more stable frames than the AMD cards, although time and drivers could even this out.

I was torn between the 5700XT and RTX2070Super myself, but because I play mainly in VR I went with the green option in the form of the MSI 2070Super Gaming X Trio.

If you don't want VR, then just save some money and grab the MSI 5700XT Gaming X - it'll have on par non VR performance and offer MSI's excellent build quality, a small overclock and quieter and cooler operation over the stock AMD cards.

Ok here is quick example ive just done to give some rough ball park figures.

Bear in mind the gpu is not the only factor here and other things matter like CPU and ram ect. So results may be different depending on your rig.

My rig is mediocore .

Ryzen 5 2600 (stock)
16gb of Corsair Ram at 3000mhz
And dcs is on its own SSD.
And of course the gpu which is a 5700xt from sapphire.

I added the ram and ssd recently before i bought the gpu and found that made quite a differnce to dcs on how smooth it ran and a huge difference in loading times

My monitor is a 32 inch 1080 Sumsung with freesync.

This test was at 1440p using AMD vsr .

The scenario was external view looking at a AV8B on ramp to try and keep things Consistant.

MSAA 0 100+ fps

MSAA x2 90 fps

MSAA x4 70fps

My options only go up X4 MSAA but im sure i read somewhere this is really X8??

SSAA x1.5 60fps

SSAA x2 45 fps

MSAA X2 + SSAA 1.5 55fps

MSAA X4 + SSAA 1.5 45fps

MSAA X2 + SSAA 2 35fps

MSAA X4 + SSAA 2 28 fps.

My in game settings are mostly high.
Of course if i went to 1080 you can add at least another 20fps to these figures.

The card is fine its dcs AA thats crap lol .

Ive also run is at 4k in VSR and with no AA it runs at around 70fps.

Hope this helps
