Track hat
Hi guys, following on from previous post I am now a few days worth in my training to get to grips with DCS.

As recommended by the community, I have started in the F/A18 and currently can take off, land, AA, AG and Harm / RWR. I still have a long way to go before I feel confident to take on missions but overall happy with my progress.

As I am using a Thrustmaster HOTAS, with around 12 buttons I am going to upgrade at some point to the Warthog. Given this is a £400 investment, I'd rather not shell out a further £500 for a decent VR kit but I am really feel the pain of having to use the thumb control on my JS to look around.

I have come across this https://www.trackhat.org/ which looks promising so after any recommendations please or if VR really is a game changer, so be it.

Current rig is i9 9900k @ 5.2Ghz, 32GB 3000 RAM, 2080 STRIX and M2 drive so I should have no issue running VR.

TIA :)

VR is all well and good but is as pricey as hell

A decent headtracker will do you just as good. I use trackIR but there are numerous other options out there such as trackhat as you already mentioned. Given the coice I would say get the HOTAS and make the compromise on head tracking

VR is the state of the art of tecnology. However, it is really expensive.
Head tracking is a good backup solution: altough the result is not the same it works pretty fine.
IMHO TrackIR is the best system since it offers better perfomances (both precise and smooth). TrackHat is less performant but is cheaper.
~£45 for the clip + PS Eye is a little steep, but yes, it's worth it.

I built a homemade equivalent (IR LED clip + PS Eye + Opentrack) for half the price and it works very well.

If you have to choose between having no headtracking set or getting that, definitely get it.

Btw, finding PS Eye vendors these days is tricky, since these cameras are no longer in production (I think).
Looks like they're available on that website for ~£12, if that's really the case, I'd definitely get at least that.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help.

I have looked at the Warthog and think I will give it a miss as it seems extremely overpriced for what you get so looking at another TM with more buttons.

Having watched few DCS VR reviews on YT, I think the money I have saved for the JS I will use for a VR as it seems very immersive. Plus I have kids who would love Fortnite in VR

Thanks again

Well, remember, there's a lot more to a HOTAS than just the number of buttons.

Still, I've noticed Warthogs going up in price lately. Here (Canuckistan) they're nearly as expensive as a Virpil setup.. it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nuts.

So do some HOTAS shopping around.

Makes sense, I have found the X56 which looks pretty decent and half the price of the HOTAS.

I am on thin ice as my PC cost literally thousands so the Mrs will likely murder me on sight if I spend a further substantial amount on JS / VR
