with the Combined Arms DLC, you can also control some ground units, or play as a commander for air and ground units
there are pre-made campaigns with most of the modules, and the Mission Editor is very strong and allows you to make very complex missions, or fast generated ones
you have two free planes, the Su-25T ( 1990s ground pounding aircraft with low fidelity system model ) and the TF-51D which is a trainer version of the P-51D ( full fidelity sytem model, and clickable cockpit )
There is the Combined Arms DLC which allows a certain amount of control, etc. over the AI ground forces. There is a degree of controlling individual tanks, etc. but it is basic. Combined Arms is not the main purpose of DCS World. I have CA but rarely use it.
The AI includes ground forces, aircraft and ships/submarines.
The supplied map/region and the DLC regions are massive in size and very detailed. I have not found their size restrictive in any way, even flying around in a jet at high speed.
Just wanted to say the controls are rather basic.. example if you drive a tank you see a crosshair that you can aim with, and a few keys to adjust range of the targeting system.. so it is rather basic..
DCS will over time develop more into a world where also ground things will be more detailed, and ships/subs but this will not happen for the next many years.
They focus on maps/helis/planes and improving everything related to this.
Of course it's open world, mate, DCS literally offers entire countries to explore.
No loading screens or invisible walls between areas of the map, that's the very definition of "open world".
Name a single "open world" game that isn't based on a map...
So you mean it is not a 'themepark' flight simulator?
it is right there is no loading time when you travel from one side of a map to an other side of the same map
however, DCS World doesn t simulate the whole World, when you leave the boundaries of a map, you start flying over a 0 details area
you have access to the free Caucasus map which focuses on Georgia, you can also buy as DLC : Normandy ( 1944 landing ), Nevada ( US training range arround Las Vegas ) and Strait of Hornuz/Persian Gulf map
you can download DCS World and play 2 planes for free over the Caucasus map, try it
You also can do that. Just put some AI units on the map and place some waypoints and enjoy the carnage. View cams are kinda tricky though.
