Can the R27ER go pitbull like the AMRAAMs?
I launched an R27ER at a Reaper drone from a SU33, I lost radar lock for 5-8 seconds, before impact I managed to reacquire lock with the mode '4' ACM. The thing is the missile was maneuvering after I had lost lock.
Here is a quick video I made:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnThEE7Nfm4&feature=youtu.be

At the end of 1 sec mark, 'ATK' and 'LA' start flashing
5 sec, radar lock lost
11 sec, reacquire lock using the number '4' ACM mode with radar still on
14th sec, impact.

Yes but if you look again, you can see the missile perform maneuvers when the lock was completely lost (at 00:10 it begins to intercept the target)
Slow the video down around that time.
The missile is only looking for the relection of your radar from the target. your radar is still on so is reflecting off the drone and the missile is picking that up. it is hard for me to tell exactly what is going on as the screen i am using is small.

No, the R27ER is a semi-active missile and recieves data from your radar requiring you to lock the target the whole time until impact. It is like the AIM-7. You can lose lock but then reaquire the target and the missile will adjust to the new data as long as the missile has the energy to make any new turns to intercept. Because the missile has no radar of its own it cannot go pitbull.
The ER has a terminal guidance system, so yes it can home itself onto a target without the help of the mother aircraft.
However since it's terminal guidance it only activates shortly before impact. I don't know the excact range but something like 5km probaly. Many Fox 1 have that capability, I think even some AIM-7s.
As stated above though it is also possible to launch a missile "dumb" without lock towards a target and lock up the target shortly before impact for miminum reaction time for your prey.
Strange, I've tried that but it had always failed. The missile (R27ER) would never manuever for an intercept even after getting a lock after firing it 'dumb' towards the enemy. Is it done only with the Su33 as it is supposed to have a better radar than the Su27?
The equivalent of AMRAAM is R-77. This one can go pitbull. But not R-27R or R-27ER.

It might be the terminal guidance system kicking in as @Delta Boy had said

In essence, a sort of TWS thing going there?
Yeah I think I got really lucky with that shot because the drone did not steer away from the initial interception path. Then when the lock was reacquired the missile only had to do minor adjustments

I believes it is more like flood mode where they it blasts a radar signal continuously. American radars will automaticly switch to flood mode if you fire a sparrow without a locked target and homes in on the object with the largest cross section.
Ah yes. Thanks a lot for the answers m8.
