DCS World Steam Edition

Mode Switching
Hey guys! I got the X-56 HOTAS from Satiek. And I was wondering if there was any way to use the three "modes" that it comes with in-game.

For those who are confused, the X-56 has a switch that has three different "modes" that you can turn it to.

I don't think it works

You can set it up, but it's time consuming (and unreliable according to many articles on the subject.)

Head over to the official DCS forums for guidance if you really want to get the Mode Switch working. There's plenty of information available. These links might set you in the right direction:

For what it's worth, I use the X52 Pro, and while I sometimes think about setting up modes, I have never bothered in the 18 months i've been using it with DCS. I think it has the potential to cause chaos in the heat of combat!

They're there to triple the number of functions on the HOTAS. For example, Mode 1 might be reserved for takeoff, landing, and general flight controls. Mode 2 could switch the functions of your HOTAS to control weapons and countermeasure systems. Mode 3 could be for external cargo management. You can really set them up how you like, but it's just like having three HOTAS in one.

I know, I was being sarcastic and frustrated. It is very difficult to program it.

Fair enough. I agree with that. I find the Logitech software seems to have a mind of it's own. I can scroll down to the function I want to program, but then it randomly resets the screen view. Never been able to work it out. I might try it on my laptop and see if I can save a profile with active modes on that, and transfer it to my gaming rig. Not the best software. It could really use a huge update.

I tried programming the thumb sticks to become a mouse. Very simple to program in the boxes. saved it but still does not work. Go figure. Nice stick but Logitech has poor support on their website and owners have to depend on forums.

Yep, I ended up disabling the ministick. Shame about the support, because the HOTAS is awesome.

Back in the day ...... during the Saitek X45 days the software worked flawless to use all the modes. Direct X and all sorts of stuff has happened and most people do not get into the guts of programming it. I bought an old X45 new in the box off ebay for 20 bucks. I set my stickup in DCS as you all do and dont worry about the 3 modes. On my stick i have 2 mode switches (6 spots) that i can adjust 6 commands to. I pull one all the way back for Air to ground mode. Forward for Air to Air mode .... and Center for nav mode. The other Auxilery switch i have 3 air 2 air modes for radar modes. I works out pretty nice. The guys over at Falcon BMS got all this stuff figured out to a tee for the Saitek and use all 50 combinations or whatever they come out to be. It is direct X programming i think. Im not a programmer.

Like the guys said in the previous post.... if the modes worked every button or switch would have three commands.

Also be aware....... I use a software to alter a joystick press INTO a keyboard press ( when i press joybutton 21=space bar) . I set my OBS stream microphone press to talk using the space bar. now i just hit a button on my stick and that is the same as hitting the space bar. ---- when i set this up i noticed that the mode keys on Saitek are ALWAYS in a pressed position. ----- So 2 slider mode and aux sliders (6 positions) so 2 are always being pressed if that makes sense. Look into autohotkey program to to amazing stuff with the flight stick. It is free.

Actually, what I found is that if you have the Saitek control panel up in the background, then the mode switch is recognized by DCS but when in flight the keyboard commands appear to be disabled... so it makes it next to useless unless you map everything you need to the joystick and don't rely on the keyboard at all... not sure if there is a way around this...

in game, set the mod dials to modifiers, move them to the switch side (right iirc) then when you put'em in they are constantly activated as modifiers. Then you can bind stuff with them as modifiers and they'll be useful.

To be honest, using the mode switch really isn't worthwhile. The X56 has enough controls that using the mode switch will only make things less efficient and more clumsy while you are flying.

I have the x45, not the X56 so not as many switches, but I think you are right... the mode switch is probably not so necessary... in VR mode it is probably more realistic to use the VR cockpit switches/dials...

i know it's an old steam community post but it's been like 5h that i been trying to use the switch mode i even manage to get a blue screen because of the usb port of my logitech X52 not pro, the use of a key for the switch for the mode work but after a while like 15 min it stop working
