Su-25T ECM/Fantasmagoria Pod/IR Jammer Help | Destroying SAM

I don't really understand how these three work.
What is ECM? What is the difference between ECM and IR Jammer? I've completed all the trainings for Su-25T and I'm still not sure how to use these. I keep getting shot down by enemy SAM even I switch on all of them, from ECM to IR Jammer.

ECM is for the electronic Spectrum, in effect this means radar. DIRCM is "Directional Infrared Counter Measures" for IR of course.

The ECM in DCS broadcasts a very large beacon on energy that messes with radars at the cost of stealth (and if too close it will actually guide missiles to you). The DIRCM simply blasts a heat wave cone out to fool missiles into hitting a false target (especially good against stingers and the like).

To be very clear, they don't stop missiles, and the DIRCM nor ECM will auto fool missiles. They are tools to reduce firing ranges on SAM's and lower their chances of a hit at longer ranges.

ECM is radar jammer. To understand how it works, imagine the radar is like flashlight in the dark with small light area. The ECM works like the damn powerfull flashlight which makes the holder of radar flashlight dazzled. Same the IR jammer. It is just damn powerfull IR emmiter which makes IR guided misilles dazzled.
Phantasmagoria works a bit different way. It is searching the position of the flashlight holder by more sensors so it is possible to triangulate its position.

I have yet to do any tests with IR jammer, it should help fool old generation of man pads like redeyes however they are not in the game, so how effective it is against stingers etc is really up in the air.

One note. IR jammer works only in REAR hemisphere of aircraft. It is just that big reflector in the tail. Sometimes people confuse it with the brake parachute box.

I have also read that much like the ECM the IR jammer can actually be detrimental in that it provides a big juicy heat source to hone in on with newer manpads, I have yet to see any real tests of its effectiveness so for all we know its doing nothing or making you easier to hit. :p

great stuff although I mean tests in game not real world data, all this means nothing if it does nothing in the game, also you must consider newer generation manpads have systems to defeat the countermeasure it may actually make it a juicier target for a manpad.

without some strict testing in game we won't know and even then it might prove inconclusive.

again it just seems like people are basing it on it "seems like" not really I have tested and it works it could very well be a placebo effect, it could also reduce the engagement range, it could actually increase the engagement range etc... till there is some video evidence of it actually working its magic (something hard to test) for all we know they happened to be shooting toward the sun.

the IR jammer on the Tankovy is the "'Sukhogruz L166S1 IR jammer" at one point I had found a little information on it but it is pretty hard stuff to track down. some say 60 degree but I find conflicting sources saying 50 degrees... so pretty narrow field basically has to be fired at rear aspect and not anywhere to the side which makes it seem not as effective as it could be since most SAMs aren't going to be fired after you overflew them and out a mile.

about all I can ascertain without knowing russian is that its an IR based lamp and not a pulse doppler system.
