Support for 16:10 Resolutions? 1920x1200 not working :l
Hello,

I purchased Fly'n during the Summer Sale and cannot even play it, because I have a 16:10 Monitor from Samsung which is incapable of correctly displaying 16:9 resolutions like the common 1920x1080 and so on. I cannot find any way to set a resolution, so here is my questsion:

How the hell can I set the game to any 16:10 resolution so that I can play it? It seems like there are no solutions to this particular problem here in the forums. I do not necessarily need 1920x1200 but a lower equivalent in a 16:10 aspect ratio has to be there, otherwise I will have to ask Valve Customer Support for a refund. The store page also doesn't mention such a big limitation anywhere.

16:10 monitor without support for 16:9? Really? Is it a black screen or what?

You can play the game in windowed mode.

It is not black but somehow distorted, the colours are off and it just looks weird, like a defunct VGA cable would look, blurry and strange. It's hard to describe and yes this monitor probably sucks, but it's also already a few years old. However, I don't want to replace it just yet and ALL other games in the world work fine with 16:10 resolutions.

If you don't like the way your monitor scales the screen, there're several options:
  • Configure it to not scale and leave black borders instead (scaling is a bad idea anyway as it distorts proportions).
  • Configure to scale using video card instead of your monitor (any decent card should do the job).
Hmm... Screen resolution is in the game's options screen. Are you sure you've moved the slider all the way to the right?

You can try changing the resolution with steam's launch options
1. Go to your steam library
2. Right click on FLY'N and go to properties
3. Under the general tab it should have a "set launch options" button
4. type the following
-w [width] -h [height]

Edit:
For a full list of launch options reference here:

@ Athari:

My screen is of course showing black borders at the top and bottom, since the game displays itself in 16:9 on an 16:10 screen/16:10 windows resolution. The thing is maybe that it does not scale correctly/at all and subsequently somehow those colour problems are caused. I have the same color distortion effect and blurriness when I use a cheap HDMI cable and set the resolution to 1024x768 and below. To play old games, I have to use a DVI cable for some reason, but in this case even that doesn't change anything.

The slider in the game settings is at the right end. No change.

I have a Radeon 7770 and now I have tried setting the GPU Image Scaling to "Fullscreen" but this also changes nothing, since the Steam overlay is displayed in the correct 1920x1200 resolution. When I set my Windows resolution to 1920x1080, everthing is stretched, unsharp and also distorted with Full Screen Scaling activated.

@ Shiny Umbreon:

I tried "-w <1920> -h <1200>" and "-w [1920] -h [1200]" and "-w 1920 -h 1200" and nothing ever changed. I don't know if I got the syntax wrong still, but my Steam, Windows and everything is still set to 1920x1200, crisp and sharp with good colours and the Game is distorted and blurry with black borders top and bottom.

@Brainslug

I have nVidia and it's configured this way:

It works perfectly with old games which don't support high resolutions.

Radeon seems to have a similar options screen:

Have you tried switching image scaling to Maintain Aspect Ratio or Use Centered Timings? Both should result in correctly displayed black bars at the top and the bottom, without any blurriness, when the resolution is set to 1920x1080.

This article has some strange suggestions, like The desktop must be set to a lower non-native resolution. You can try switching resolution to 1920x1080, configuring scaling, then starting the game...

You are right, when I set my resolution to 1920x1080 those other options are no longer greyed out and I have black bars on top and bottom even in windows. The monitor correcetly shows 1920x1080 resolution and is sharp, even ingame, but the colours are still distorted somehow. It is only a small effect now, but still not as good as it should be and I really don't want those bars and to switch my whole resolution everytime I want to play that game. I think I will try it on my little AMD netbook, maybe it is powerful enough so I can play the game there. Otherwise I will have to wait a while until I purchase a new monitor with an even higher resolution.

I thank you for your time and your help. Maybe the developers will look into the Steam forums one day and implement a real way to change the aspect ration, I mean how hard can that be.

Hi

I do read all topic on the forum ( but not on week end ^^).

We tested the game on every screen configuration ( some part of the team had 16/10 screens). One team member played it on a 4/3 screen.
You won't be able to set the resolution without having black bars on your screen, I is a design constraint.

I have no idea yet why you have such strange colors. Did you check your graphic card drivers? Do you have the problem playing windowed mode (Alt+ enter or select the option in the options)?
