Probably the worst gaming experience I have ever had.
This isn't even complaining about the bugs or the Windows 95 era graphics, I can understand those. I'm also not complaining about the terrible amount of bugs, I get that it's a mod off an old game.

What bothers me about the brief time I played this trash is that it's just such a terrible game.
I was instantly turned off by the BS "disclaimer" about this game causing suicide and depression. Exactly how many people could have their lives torn apart over the span of one week? It's such a blatant lie that it really just turns into an insult to anyone that bothered to play this game.

Next, once actually starting the game, I was vexed by the very long cutscene introduction that had nearly no content. The visuals are not exactly next-gen in this game, which does not bother me so much, as I have no issue playing a game that isn't particularly visually impressive if it has fun gameplay. I understand they were trying to set the tone of the game itself, but I don't need to see someone staring out of the window of a train intercut with a boring city to understand that. I could get past the "Emo G-Man" voiceover at the beginning, but at this point it became even more of an insult.

Moving on to the introduction, I became only more disappointed. The opening setpiece where you stumble around in the dark was nothing short of ardous. For those of you that have not yet experienced this trash game, let me set the stage: you are given a camera that you can use the flash on with LMB. Everything is a black void except for large white "X"'s scattered around. You stumble around with the clunky controls and use the flash to reveal what is under each X. Sometimes it's a door, but most of the time it's a cheap jump scare, of a corpse or something. Additionally, many of them don't work unless you are right up on top of them, so there may have been things I didn't get to see. One of them was a door I had to awkwardly crouch-jump through which did not appear correctly, since I wasn't at the exact angle the game demanded. I guess perhaps it may have been a window? I can't be sure since my only point of reference was more X's farther along. I could have stumbled over a pile of dead bodies for all I know.

To end this annoying section, the game makes you stumble a very long way to take a picture of one X in particular, when a poorly-rendered zombie head ghost thing screams at you in another cheap jump scare. That's right, five minutes into the game and they're already resorting to the lame "shock video" tactic that was prevalent on YouTube four or five years ago.

Next, your character randomly wakes up in an alley, and worries aloud that it's getting dark, although this setpiece was clearly late at night. You get a text from your mum about how it's getting dark (?) and you should go home. Then you get to wander around some alleys and a subway station until...

Well I don't know until what. I had out my sick dual-wield knife and phone combo, and when I walked past a door the game kicked me to the title screen. A tooltip jumped up and told me I could sprint by pressing L-Shift, but it would reduce my stamina and I could only do it for a few seconds. Luckily that's the type of emergent gameplay I love, since that hasn't been done to death in every single modern FPS of the last five years.

All of this led me to think that perhaps the title screen disclaimer did have some merit. Playing this garbage will probably make you depressed, perhaps even to the point of suicide. It certainly made me aggressive, although only at the people responsible for this horrible game.

Do yourself a favor, avoid this at all costs. Free is not a good enough price, they should pay you for wasting the hard drive space on this trash.

The disclaimer when starting up Cry of Fear is just for ♥♥♥♥ and giggles - it really depends on what type of person you are, weither you are tough and twitch at what gets ya, or the others who "literally" get a heartattack, screaming.

To be honest, the only thing really needed in that disclaimer is the, "strong content," because its lack of rating.

I mean, I guess I can let that part go, and I can ignore the outdated graphics and the buggy engine. (Clipping in the opening pre-rendered cutscenes is kind of hilarious in a morbid way) However, I really can't excuse the rest of this horrible game. It's bad, it's unfinished, and it really should have had an extra set of eyes before seeing wide release on Steam.

Actually, the cutscenes are rendered in-game :P.

Though the game gets twisted more and more as you continue to play through, and yes - the beginning part is a bit boring and whatnot but continuing to play, hopefully, will take the bitter taste from your mouth.

The disclaimer is practically ripped straight from classic PS1 Capcom games like Resident Evil & Dino Crisis. Its there to immediately let you know that this is an old school horror game. Just as Retro City Rampage is for those who grew up on the NES.

This game does do a lot of jump scares but it is also fantastic at suspense and building up to scares. Its in no way a terrible game, but it is very retro. Its a nostalgic trip for some of us, but for others it will be a reminder of what they like about modern games. Personally having a blast with this but I can see how its not for everyone.

I'm older than you think. Trust me. And for the record, the opening blurb for Resident Evil 1-3 was "This game contains scenes of explicit violence and gore." It didn't say "This game might make you go kill yourself." The one in Resident Evil 4 had a small update about the language and sexual content, but was overall the same and didn't make bogus claims about the game destroying your entire mental well-being.

I guess I can try it again, but honestly the few minutes I played were horrible. Not scary at all, just unfun, clunky gameplay. Sure I jumped when the zombie head thing yelled at me, but that was it, a jump, equivalent to when someone yells "BOO!" when you walk around a corner, or when the masked killer jumps out in a slasher movie. It isn't "scary," it just plays on your reflexes to make you recoil.

You guys have made decent (and most importantly flame-free) arguments for the game, I might give it another shot after work tomorrow, and try to keep an open mind.

EDIT:

Unlike this guy. Simply saying "hater" does not equate to an argument or defense, it's just immature. I posted several legitimate complaints about this game, is that really the best you can think of?

It's free, if you hate it so much just delete it and move on. There's really no need to complain, the developers don't owe you anything.

Last one before I gotta go:
I know it's free, but many people check the discussions pages before buying or downloading a game, no matter the cost. I was giving my honest opinion for anyone that might be interested. I agree they don't "owe" me anything, but could they at least have made a game that was, you know, fun to play with less bugs before pushing it to Steam? I'm not trying to start anything and if you like the game, hey, you like the game. I was just giving a brief review for anyone that might be interested.

At least he isn't saying, "♥♥♥♥ THIS GAME, IT IS ♥♥♥♥♥♥ AND BUGGY. DON'T PLAY THIS PIECE OF ♥♥♥♥!!!!!"

No problem.

I like this game a lot...if ur a next gen gamer there is nothing here for you to appreciate.

This is basically a first person Resident Evil 1....seriously...it's awesome. The coop is still freaky and challenges need to be thought out...is it buggy? Yes but that's part of the charm.

Let's not forget it's a mod...using an EXTREMELY dated engine...before even source.

I'd give a 7/10, awesome game...but needs to be worked on a bit:) If it had dedicated server options and some of the graphics bugs (example me tabbing out and it then changing my resolution) fixed, I'd prob give this 8-9:) still playing it so I might change even the 7/10!

In terms of coop...this is the first horror coop where I still get freaked:D

In terms of graphics...yes it's dated but I wouldn't say 95...I mean have u seen enviroments? This is an early 2000s game...no argument about it...they squeezed A LOT out of the engine...ALOT!

I mena look at half life that's a late 90s (98/99 game) it looks worse than this ...yet ppl are fine with that...and still love it to death...so ppl need to stop complaining and try to find the charm in this game.

if u think is windows 95 era graphics, that means u don't play video games before 2004

They really shouldn't have openned the game with that cheap scare. It gives a really bad first impression. I've played a lot of horror games but this is one of the few thats got my heart racing and hair standing on end in certain sections. Horror is very subjective, some people wont be bothered at all by this game.

Again about the disclaimer... its not meant to be taken seriously, that the player of the game might be driven to suicide but that the subject matter involves those things in the disclamer.

Clunky controls? Wait.. What?

And yeah that intro totally sucks! Instead of just sitting in a train we need Simon to be shooting stuff, with random explosions going off as dubstep plays in the background.
