Do you still need to own Half life 1/2 to play?

My friend keeps getting "half life launcher is not responding" when trying to load the game. Just curious if its because he doesnt have halflife

It should already be installed once you initially installed the game.

I can't really remember but I believe it does indeed require half life 1, since it uses it as a base. In case I am wrong tel him to verify the game cache and see if it works.

I just tried launching the game after not having played it since 2015 and got the same thing. Verify game files fixed it for me.

Friend keeps either crashing or if the game manages to start, the resolution is like WAY bigger then it should be. even tho he chose the same resolution as his computer.
