I thought it was kinda mean of Simon tbh. The first thing he looks at when he wakes up in chapter 1 is a text from his mum asking where he is. so he's not alone.

I think that this is the most relatable speech in gaming history

It's a description of the thick darkness which has infested his mind and psyche, just like depressions do. They attach to the mind like pure pestilence and poison all thoughts until the whole perception of the person's life/ world is purely or at least mostly negative.

It's like a void, a senselessness of existence in general, the absence of true and deep emotional contact which feels like walking through a ghost town (mind my name), even though if being surrounded by people. Depressions are like an icy grip for any joy in life to suffocate it to the point of being unbearable.

A depressive person could be surrounded by loving ones, be in a partnership, even win in the lottery, the thick and sticky pestilence of depressions emtpies your mind. You can even see it in the eyes of depressed people, how joyless and emtpy they are if the depression is a major one.

And just like Simon says, loneliness is one of the big reasons for depressions.
