Cry Of Fear 1.0 installation

So I installed this title on my PC, I can find it in steam, and wanted a back up copy. When I launch the mod, the menu and game are smeared beyond playability. The menu says the same thing 5+ times, and smears to the right. I cannot fix it on my own, even with manual patches. Would anyone be kind enough to help someone trying to learn more about mods?

Wait, are you installing an older version of the game over the newer one or what's going on?

No, I have the newer version from Steam, but tried to mod Half life to create a second version, for reasons I do not wish to state so people do not get ideas. But it won't run.

The older one does not work and it has to do with the same reason the devs released a stand alone that cannot be updated: Valve released an update to HL1 that broke a lot of mods and made them completely unplayable, including cry of fear. So...there's no way to play older versions of the game.

This sucks, companies shouldn't break mods like that, that is what makes
pc gaming great.

I downloaded it today and i get past the camera tutorial and then get to the part where you get the phone and knife and i try to go through the first door you can open and i crash the game.

My problem is more peculiar. I cannot even get past 1 second of the camera tutorial because everything is smeared gray. I just honestly want it because steam is on that removing games kick, if they remove this, I am dropping Steam. No joke. I will keep my games but move to humble bundle or something. I support this title, big time. I even have Simon's hoodie, David Leatheroff's hoodie, and two cry of fear shirts, and an Afraid of Monsters shirt. Love this game, and support the team, plan on donating ten bucks when I can afford it, not just for the gun, but because I would love to see this game sold as a true stand alone. I would easily pay 29.99 plus for this if they patched it. Maybe updated the engine. But doubt they will, this game was made by like 8 people.

I recommend you use xash3d on PC to run this version (there is a Github page that has some files to be able to run the first version of cry of fear on xash3d on PC)
