Anyway to save without tape recorder?
I hate playing and then having to leave later and having to restart where I last saved.

Nope, in classic survival horror fashion using a tape recorder is the only way to save your progress.

Tape recorders are not that far from each other so I don't see a problem

That’s true but trying to go for nightmare mode. Having to leave in the middle of the game is quite annoying.
