Survival Arena Co-Op?

So after finding out that there is Survival mode, which is surviving for 30 minutes and killing every enemy reduces time with Book Simon freezing time. I noticed it IS a Co-Op game, but everytime I would set up the game (LAN of course to try it out), no lobby is started. Does the game immediately start when at least 1 player is in the game? And does that mean, any player can join in during the game?

I've never done co-op, but if I had to guess and it didn't make a lobby then more then likely it's one of those games they'd have to join in on from clicking your name on the friends list on steam. That'd be my guess.
