By portforwarding and giving each other your public IP address, then typing connect IPAddress:27015 in the console. Not that hard.

The co-op is separate from the single player campiagn. It's non-canon and takes place after the main campaign.

Also, the game is very easy once you learn how to play. There's minimal skill and next to no luck involved. It's just about learning how to deal with the different types of enemies and remembering their locations.
