Rope No Place

is there some item i'm missing? i have about 5 ropes and still cannot figure out how to place them. I looked up online and every result i find just says press r with one hand free. Please someone tell me if i'm just dumb.

Press R to bring up the hammer that pins the ropes in/pulls them out, and then E (or whatever you've set the interact key to) when you see a white outline to hammer in a rope or pull it out.

I'm assuming you've tried pressing R with one hand free and it hasn't worked.

I'm also assuming you haven't done the Lighthouse level, because that's where you get the hammer, which is required to use ropes.

Wait, since you did not get it originally they must have mailed it to you, and most people talk to the npcs so no one new about that
