The demo is a bit outdated. In that demo you can only pick up the second ice axe once you are holding on with the first one.
So equip axe, hold onto to ice and then grab the second pickaxe while holding?
Demo is pretty fun btw, keep up the good work :)
Yup, that should be it. Cheers!

Btw, in the full game version, does one still automatically dislocate the the last used rope when equipping the hammer? Since i only have a 2 ropes the logical way would be to ascend a bit, use the hammer for safety, ascend further and place the 2nd rope above the 1st rope, then descend and reclaim the 1st rope and get back up easy (and quickly) with the 2nd rope. Sure this method takes time, but its possible.
Is this still in the final game version? This might be a dealbreaker for me :(

Edit: Read the news regarding this. You made rope collectibles to increase the number of ropes. You still included a version which allows this feature, but this feature also trivializes getting the collectables in the first place.

Imo, it would be more immersive if one is allowed to recollect said rope without detaching and also less punishing. Imagine climbing the mountain for the 1st time, being near the end and not being able to ascend further safely. This is more or less punishment for not knowing when to put a rope or not. Maybe its because of my experience of IRL climbing, which is always safety first. ( i know this is not a realistic climbing sim btw :D)

Please dont take it as offense, i am just curious. Im having such a blast with the demo and still figuring out to buy it or not.

You wont detach when you equip the hammer. You will however disconnect the previous rope when putting down a new rope (auto-attaches to the new one). You will also disconnect when pulling out an anchor even if you are attached.
If you would still be attached while pulling out previous anchors, it would remove the challenging aspects of the game completely as you could be attached through the whole route. Rope collectables would also mean nothing in this case.

I understand your perspective fully and i respect your design/gameplay decision. However, please read my edited statement above and maybe, if its possible, include a seperate mode with the rope feature available but with increased difficulty ( smth like thirst or hunger which blocks regenaration from 100% to 70% and lower as time goes on but can be recharged with limited items, disabling the super power jump i have seen in streams which skips parts of the routes entirely, etc.)
