I grew up playing all the Contra games and even enjoyed Shattered Soldier and Neo contra despite the reception they got, especially the latter.
While I would be open to the idea of continuing the main timeline, it kind of already reaches an ending in the PS2 games, albeit a bittersweet one. Since all the main characters end up dead:
-Lance dies in Shattered Soldier fighting the Triumvirate (the main conspirators behind the alien wars)
- Lucia dies being forced to serve Master Contra (Project C), who's the real Bill Rizer's DNA and consciousness.
-Finally old Bill himself, who's basically keeping a low profile as Mystery G (wears the same armor as the Bill in Shattered Soldier, also mentions he was once "Contra") dies fighting Master Contra, after giving the fake Rizer some inspiring words to live by.

The only thing they can do is continue the main story with the fake Bill Rizer and Jaguar, but I'd rather they just go back to the original duo and hopefully not reach such a depressing end for them this time.
Edit: Also I know the Hard Corps group exists in the original timeline, but their story was usually its own thing with hardly any tie-ins to the main plot.
Yeah I'm really looking forward to the Alien Wars story. The third game was my favorite.
