how gameover works?
i know this game have customizable HP bars and lives when you unlock it. but the continues and checkpoints? if you finish all lives more times (4 or more) you restart the level, the entire game old school or you still get the mid level checkpoint?

There are no mid level checkpoints... if you fail, you have infinite attempts to continue but you have to start the entire stage over from scratch.

It also saves your progress if you quit out which is a nice quality of life improvement.

I mean the original games, you had 3 continues and that was it... then you had to start over from level 1. The levels are significantly harder than O.G. contra titles though.. especially once you start getting to the last half of the game stages 5 - 8... they're unbearable in some sections.

i played with a friend on steam remote on easy mode because he isn't an hardcore gamer and just wanted to have fun. i finished old contra with life codes (near not finished 2 of them still) so i was hoping this have a nice balance of hard mode but not too easy.
so on harder difficulties you still have those limited lives for each level of the game (like every stage is a game itself) and the "checkpoint" basically is the completed level, no limited continues. guess max difficulty it will be hard to finish because it's harder, but still you don't need to restart over all the game

This isn't true, there ARE mid level checkpoints you continue from after a game over. You can even choose between "continue" and "restart stage" on the game over screen. Only on hard mode, the check points are not available and you have to restart the entire stage. And on the two extreme difficulty modes you can unlock, there are no continues at all.

In story mode you can finish level by level and you can pick which stage you want. Story mode is easier than arcade mode even on same difficulty (in my experience).

If you want original version like experiences I recommend Arcade mode. If Arcade Hard still not satisfy you may considered buy harder mode from perk shop.

I don't need to spoil so all I can tell is there is no mid level check point in any mode. If you failed you may infinitely continue but start from the beginning of that stage or game over.

I did not know there are mid level check points. I was typing and not refresh the page so I did not see your comment. Thank you for your information.
