It also saves your progress if you quit out which is a nice quality of life improvement.
I mean the original games, you had 3 continues and that was it... then you had to start over from level 1. The levels are significantly harder than O.G. contra titles though.. especially once you start getting to the last half of the game stages 5 - 8... they're unbearable in some sections.
so on harder difficulties you still have those limited lives for each level of the game (like every stage is a game itself) and the "checkpoint" basically is the completed level, no limited continues. guess max difficulty it will be hard to finish because it's harder, but still you don't need to restart over all the game
If you want original version like experiences I recommend Arcade mode. If Arcade Hard still not satisfy you may considered buy harder mode from perk shop.
I don't need to spoil so all I can tell is there is no mid level check point in any mode. If you failed you may infinitely continue but start from the beginning of that stage or game over.
