How long did you wait until you terminated "Download data" progress?
we've just checked the issue.
To join the game, host has to send you current sector...it's a lot of data (like 1-2 MB or so, coop maps are generally larger than deathmatch).
"Downloading data" duration depends on HOST UPLOAD speed and CLIENT DOWNLOAD speed. We've run some tests and when both host and client has high-speed internet connection (e.g. 10 MBit upload and download), it's blink of an eye. With lower speeds (e.g. 1 MBit both up and down), it takes few seconds (5-10s). On mobile internet and bad signal...it takes forever.
Unstable/laggy internet connection has significant impact on download duration.
There's one more thing: Mostly you'll have upload speed much lower than download speed, e.g. 8 MBit download and 1 MBit upload. Even 6 MBit download and 0.2 MBit upload is quite common.
To reduce download time you can:
Pause/Cancel all downloads (especially torrents)
Close internet browser (browser games, youtube preload can download data)
Quit other apps which uses internet (skype...)
We may add some kind of progress bar and current download speed to "Downloading data" dialog.
