Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Things and bugs about this game
The main focus of this thread is to tell my experience with this game and the bugs that i've faced and how i managed to finish the game without messing with patches. Well, and after a long journey, i finally made it.

This game, besides all the bugs, it's a great game, and i'm glad that i had the oportunity to play it, but there are things to consider before play this game, imo.

The game got a lot of bugs, as the most of you may know, and that can be really painful and frustrating.

i'll list all the bugs that i've experienced down below

-The hanging Lady
Bug: This was the first bug. In the beginning of the game there's a hanging woman in a room and if you enter this room the game freeze, you can only reaload the game or exit but you can't move at all
Solution: You can make through this bug by simply enter the room jumping, if you do that the it will trigger a cutscene and that's it. Or you can just skip this part there's nothing in the room.

-The cabinet in the office - Attack of the fishmen

Bug: There's a save point behind cabinet/shelf (dont remember exactly the object) and if you try to move the game crashes.

Solution: I needed to replace the .exe of the steam version by the GOG one. The file was provided by Tatsuya Hikori in this comunity thread:http://steamcommunity.com/app/22340/discussions/0/1480982338966763267/

This file replacement could help to avoid other major bugs. i dont know for sure but i think it's worth a try.

Cannon - Devil's Reef

Bug:There's a bug when you are on the ship. You need to shoot some Priests at Devil's reef but you can't see the light that suposed to glow there.
Solution: You can shoot the priests even without see, just follow this guide - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=144143757, it worked for me

Hydra Switches Boss fight

Bug:When you try to hit the switches behind the statues it does't move, it seem there's a specific way to defeat this boss. If you leave any Deep Ones alive when you try to focus on the pool you won't be able to hit the switches.

Solution:
User named - Demonnnnn. on this thread - https://steamcommunity.com/app/22340/discussions/0/666825525201861428/ posted a video showing how you supose to defeat this boss, the only way it worked for me was to follow the steps of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGHqdEo36So

Falling Rocks

Bug: At the very end of the game you need to run through a corridor and every single time ended up dying smashed by a rock.
Solution: The way i managed to fix it was changing my resolution to 800x600. It seem that you can run faster when the resulution is low. This worked for me

Besides all those bugs and moments of pure frustration i really liked this game that's the reason i ended up making this post. Sorry about any grammar issues or something, english isn't my first language, my goal was to help some of you that may face some of those annoying bugs and make it through the end of this game.

I originally played this game on the Xbox when it came out. It was one of my favorites. Haven't gotten around to playing it on the PC (got it for free). Nice that you were able to finish it, and found some good workarounds for the bugs you encountered.

I can't get past the trapdoor in the first chapter. The game just keeps hard crashing :(

Any fixes for that?

Well, i dont know about this specific bug but i think that if you replace the steam CoC .exe may solve the problem.

Yeah, man. For sure it's a great game and worth to play even with those bugs, at least for me. Thanks and i hope this thread could help someone.

RE: The hanging Lady
I've found the script for this bug I think.
The script makes a call to
D_PlayerLockMove()
to lock the players controls and then
D_PlayerWatchObject("*REMOVEINSTATIC_BGANIM_HANGING", 1, "WatchRateVeryResponsive")
which moves the players view to the hanging woman.
There's then a
Wait(3.0)
which waits 3 seconds.
Then at the end the players controls are unlocked
D_PlayerUnlock()
and the watching is stopped
D_PlayerReleaseWatch()

It looks like the last part may not be happening which locks the players controls out and looks like the game has frozen.

Unfortunately I've not been able to replicate the bug to test any changes to the scripts that could fix this.
Does anyone have any ideas of how to replicate?

Well, for me it happens everytime i've tried to enter the room walking. It happened like 3 or 4 times and then i've saw someone who said that this bug could be avoided if you just jump when you enter the room.

Yes there's a trigger there that kicks off the effect of looking at the hung woman that you can jump over it would seem.

I can definitely fix it by removing the insanity effect but I'd like to see if I can fix it and still have that happen.

Are you interested in testing some potential fixes?
(Would simply involve me sending you a few versions of the scripts\02_streets_one.bat file).

Also for the Cannon - Devil's Reef bug someone called Guzz fixed that so you can play it properly and it's now in the 1.6 Patch.

Um what does that mean? :(

I've managed to recreate The hanging Lady bug using a d3d9 hooking program to remove the framerate limit :)
sucklead Jan 6, 2018 @ 1:30pm
And I've got a cross version fix for that now :)
Will look at The cabinet in the office issue next.
