I'd recommend rotating your saves with this game, some areas can become practically impossible if you haven't got a certain number of healing items (unless you gid gud). You can have 6 different saves at one time so that's usually plenty to keep making solid progress.
These areas are specifically (as of my most recent playthrough) :
The car escape from Innsmouth and the Shoggoth puzzle in the Marsh Refinery Basement.
Hope this helps.
The car escape from Innsmouth, the Shoggoth puzzle in the Marsh Refinery Basement, and the final chase sequences are all timed sequences. The reason we have so little time to beat them on modern systems is because the game has an uncapped framerate, and hence we run it much faster than what is stable. Nevertheless, all of these issues (and perhaps even the Brian bug) can be resolved by enabling VSYNC in your GPU's control panel, or using an external program to limit your fps to 60.
I have made a guide to run this game on modern systems: http://imgur.com/a/vaAvo
Totally agree with your recommendation to rotate saves - just in case.
