How can i play with my friend?

I want to play with my friend but i cant. There is only Quick Play. And when I want to join him it by typing his name it says "Friend currently not playing". So how can i play with him?

I was told that was the way to join a friend. I have hot tried it yet.

Has anyone tried joining a friend from the steam friends list - right click options?
