1080p is a resolution of 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels, i.e. it's an aspect ratio of 16:9.
You have two options to play games at a resolution of 1080p, in a 1920x1080 window or fullscreen.
The fullscreen scaling behaviour depends on the game: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Glossary:Scaling
My recommendation:
If you want to play games at an aspect ratio of 16:9, play the game pillarboxed at a resolution of 2560:1440.
Most immersive solution:
If you want to use the entire monitor for gaming, community created modifictaions exist for many games that don't support natively a wider aspect ratio than 16:9. The games can be modded to support wider aspect ratios than 16:9.
pcgamingwiki.com is imo the best source.
