The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Game's activation on Steam
I (for some stupid, implusive reason as I should have realise the Steam's GOTY Deluxe was cheaper in my currency) bought the game with the two dlc, knights of the nine and shivering isles, on disc for about 40 SGD in a store. This edition was called the '5th year anniversary edition'. I am, quite certain at least, that it is not a pirated version as it does not come in those plastic cheap bags and it has a 'preorder now' ad for skyrim (also, it has a map for the shivering isles and cyrodiil and Singapore's strict crack-down on anyone selling pirated copies of digital stuff). I was wondering if I could bind it with Steam. The reason for this is the typical Singaporean being 'kia-su' (stupidly careful) and I am scared (lol?) that I may lose it or it gets damaged. I know I could add it as a non-steam game, but can I download the game files from Steam in case something happens to my physical copy? I just don't feel like paying for something again when I could have bought the same content of the GOTY version twice (well, almost twice) for the same amount of cash.

As far as I know, you cannot. Just be careful with your disk:back it up on your computer for example

Thanks, now I really got to buy the GOTY version if I really lose or get it damaged. Oh well.

Read what he said, back it up on your computer.
I heard You might be able to activate it through the games CD key by going to Games>activate a product on steam. I dont know absolutly if that works though. You might wanna try that.

The only problem is that I do not have to enter any key when installing the game. But I need the game's disc to play. At least I do not have a problem with my physical copy of Skyrim and MW3, which automatically registers themselves with my Steam client.

i had the same questions when i installed Oblivion from a double pack with FO3. it turns out that Steam are not supporting anything but the downloads anymore(at least the new ones anyway) check ur version after install, ill bet its upto date.
as stated above, make a backup of the disk somehow.

If I need the disc to play, how would I use it if I only have to files? I do not want to use those image burning software as, I believe, is against the TOS(es). Anyway, I bought the deluxe edition; so I don't think this thread needs much attention anymore.

the disk is only needed bc they have a 'comment' in the main exe file saying that the disk is needed to say that u own the original software. theres really only 1 way around it.

I know this is a bit late, but there is a patch which you can download so you can play the game without the disc.

I.E Piracy, except without the whole game, just the .exe file, right...

well, if you want to get extremely technical, wether a no-cd crack qualifies as piracy is kind of a grey area, under united states law at least, don't know about where you live. All it is is someone changing the .exe to uncheck the "check disc flag" and as such, isnt really piracy, its more of a mod. It enables the play of a pirated version, but using a modified .exe itself im sure would not be considered piracy, so long as you arent distributing it. (again, this is united states law, likely different elswhere.) The same goes for making a so called "archive/backup copy" most TOS/EULA provide a provision to make a backup of the disc, not allowed to distribute it or have multiple backups, the usual deal. Probably a good idea to read them to be safe. Another thing, the disc itself has none of the so called anti-piracy, beyond the usual disc-check, which makes it very easy to make a backup. If you truly want an answer of specifics on what you are allowed to do, i would highly suggest going to bethesda softwork's forums and simply asking. Once again, unless you are breaking encryptions or distributing copies it doesnt qualify as piracy under United states law. I would check those in your local area before actually doing anything though

If your game is on this list, you can add it to Steam. You do not need the disk(s) for this, just the key.
