Corrupt Save
So apparently my save file and the autosave file got corrupted after minimizing the game window, and I only kept one save file for around 80 hours of play. On one hand it's not all bad, after all I did finish the main quest before the problem, but I still wanna finish the rest of the quests in the game without starting over.

So, are there any solutions to this problem?

The autosave backup may still work. Go to C:\Users\yourusername\Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves and rename Autosave.bak to Autosave.ess

If you have Steam Cloud Sync enabled for Oblivion, then you could try either moving the corrupt saves to another location, rename them or simply delete them (from out side of Steam).

Then launch Steam, and it will restore the corrupt files (from the Cloud Sync). In my experience, 85% of corrupt saves are locale, and I have recovered many times in the past using this technique.

Will try, thanks.

Tried that, didn't work, but at least the game doesn't crash on start up anymore.

So if you load an older save it still works ?

Game crashing at strat up isn't due to corrupt game saves, it's usually an incompatabilty of settengs, a mod conflict (or error), or a corupted ini file.

^ or a combination of any or all above :0)

Some time after the corrupt game save, came the crash at start up. Reinstalled the game and now works good.
Yup, older saves still work.

Proberbly didn't need to re-install the whole game, just the ini file by the sounds of it, still if it's all working now then that's good no matter how it came about.

Tried this and there was a newer file named autosave.ess. I changed autosave .bak to autosave.ess and it named it autosave.ess(2). Not sure if I did this correctly. reply with help if you can. Thanks.

Tried this too. And the files aren't being removed from saves location. They go to the recycle bin and I empty it, but the problem is still there. i.e. corrupt save file. Please help if you can, anybody.

Had the same problem recently. The solution to avoiding corrupt saves, is to never let the game autosave or overwrite any saves. Go back several "manual" saves until you find one that will load for you. Delete any saves AFTER that point, and only manual save from that point on. Hope that helps

After trying a LOT of different ways to resolve this issue, I was on the verge of giving up. Then I realized that the game did not save properly when your character is infected by vampirism and his health is being drained. However, the health does not get drained indoors and during brief time periods outdoors. If you save the game during these two time periods, it should load properly.

Renaming autosave.bak to autosave.ess does work. Putting this here for my future reference

quite honestly i'd never use only a single save file even on modern bethesda titles. so i hope this works out for you.
