Longswords and claymores have good reach. You can get Umbra at an early level. It is a longsword so it has good reach and it also has high base damage.
Maces are strong they have good base damage and pretty good reach. I don't know if it is a placebo, but it seems like maces make excellent contact. I don't seem to miss alot like I do with swords, but it might just be me.
The reason you should use both is so you can take advantage of enchanted weapons that you may find in your adventures. Weapons have limited charges, and although you can recharge them, you come across so many weapons you can just blow through charges on whatever weapon you get and then toss it.
You shouldn't use both as Major Skills, only use one or the other. I actually like not having either as Major Skills because you can choose to use either at anytime without them causing you to gain a level.
