Saves won't appear when I load my game, but are still in the save games folder

Game crashed which is normal. Booted it back up and my saved games don't appear when I click load game. I can make a new game and that's fine, it even saves it as "Save game 1". But my old saves are gone.

I went into \Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves and my old saves are there, they just don't appear when I boot up Oblivion and click "load game". I almost never overwrite a save game, and I don't use autosave or quicksave, so it's not anything to do with that. Anyone have any idea what's going on and what I can do?

So Steam didn’t tell me about all these responses until I checked on my phone, sorry about that. Who needs notifications I guess.

I was able to recover my ess files by going into my Steam user data and checking the different numbered folders. It looked like Steam folder > userdata > numbered folder > 22330 > ac. You could also just go to userdata and do a search for .ess files. Some responders here did the same thing it sounds like.

I found all my saves that way and copied them back over into my savegames folder.
