The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Borders ini
Can someone walk me through how to turn borders off using the ini? It has been made quite apparent that opening the ini through the Oblivion data files and editing that doesn't do anything. (I've heard it is a back-up?)
Can someone help me make this change?

Sure, go to the Oblivion Configuration file in My Documents > My Games > Oblivion.

Open it in Notepad, scroll down to bBorderRegionsEnabled=1, then just change the 1 to a 0 and save it. Job done.

That is exactly what I did, but it didn't seem to work. I changed the origional to 0, I made a copy and made that 0 while putting a ; before the original, and I got rid of the copy and changed the original back to 1 and back to 0 again.
There is clearly something I'm not doing properly.

right click on the file, go to properties, and make sure it isn't set to read only.

It is not. I'm trying everything I can here.

Okay, then try clicking 'save as' instead of save. I end up having to do that with mine, or sometimes even having to save it multiple times for it to stick.

Okay, I think there might be a problem here: Instead of BorderRegionEnabled my ini file says EnableBorderRegion. Should I change the text?

hmm, I cant think of much else that would be changing it, although, if it saves the changes made in Oblivion_Default in your install directory, you could delete your current .ini, copy oblivion_default over, and then rename it to oblivion.ini. You would have to redo your graphics changes, but it should fix the issue.

yes. that would be the problem, it should read 'bBorderRegionsEnabled=1' for the borders on. Turn the one to a zero to remove them. I still love how gamebryo handles functionless lines in its .ini files. Most engines would go, 'wait a minute, This ain't right!' and crash to let you know there is a problem, but gamebryo is more 'this is odd, oh well, lets ignore it and use the default settings for missing lines'.

I changed it to say bBorderRegionsEnabled=0 and still no change. Should Regions have an s? I literally have no clue how to proceed from here.

Should this be under the [MAIN] heading? it's the only variable in that part.

*facepalms* I didnt consider that you were trying to change the one under main. That one should not be messed with. open your .ini hit ctrl+f and type in bborder, and the first result is the one you need to change. it is between bExternalLODDataFiles and bDisableHeadTracking

I clearly have a seperate ini file from the rest of you guys, because it is nowhere near the ExternalLOD, and I can't even find DisableHeadTracking
Are there any known mads that would do this, or is Steam just messing with me?

I would say that you should copy and paste the text in your .ini file, maybe see what is wrong with it, because there should be multiple entries under [MAIN]

Sounds like you're editing the wrong ini file. The one you should be editing is just called "Oblivion" and is located in the My Games>Oblivion folder, not the one called "Oblivion_default" in steamapps>common>Oblivion.

Up to this point, I had believed I was editing the file in My Games and not Steam Apps, but apparently Windows 8 doesn't like me moving on with my life, so it decided to pick a different file from the one I wanted.
Okay, thanks for everyone's help, I have gotten it working now, and the only one at fault here is Microsoft.
