The combat system
Hello readers,
I wanted to ask you some things about the combat, because it´s just annoying for me, maybe I´m doing something wrong. I tryed to make something like a battle mage, I´m a breton with blade, heavy armor, block and some magic, but even with my blade skill up to 100 I´m just not doing enough damage on anything. This stupid goblin warlocks (or something) take forever to die and they just constantly block everything and I´s so time consuming!

What am I doing wrong?

Tanks for help :)

You gotta rely on spells and abilities in order to overcome certain enemies. Are you using an enchanted blade? Simply relying on physical damage won't be enough.

I have nothing enchanted, I wasn´t in every town for the mages recommendation. should I do that first than? I fight with umbra and a summoned dremora lord

What level is your character? What's your strength value? Since you decided to play as a Breton, your forte would be spellcasting. I get the feeling that's the department in which your character lacks.

my strengh is at 100

If you talk about Damage dealing via blade, your BLADE SKILL is major factor.
From Formula
Blade sklill : Strengh = 3 : 1

And Goblins in TES4 is not like goblins in other Games.
They are growing hardrer and harder with your character levels.

You've run into Oblivion's most famous problem - obscene enemy scaling. What happens is that enemies get ridiculous amounts of armor, combined with surprisingly large health pools, results in little damage.

One solution is to turn the difficulty down for sanity's sake. The best solution would be to install a mod that overhauls enemy scaling so that things don't get so obscene. (I don't have a good recommendation, and anyways, you would most likely be required to start over if you did install the mod.)

It´s ok, I wanted to play oblvion because I liked skyrim so much and I played morrowind without mods too (I personaly don´t like the overhaul and prefer the original^^) and the only problematic enemy for me are the goblins^^
Humans or daedra? they are weak as leaf compared to the goblins XD
ManualMakron Apr 29, 2015 @ 1:41pm
You should rely on their weaknesses. Increase your strength beyond 100 with enchantments and spells. Use poisons to deal extra damage... You'll have to rely on enchanting anyways.

problem is, I was already over lvl 20 when I entered the first oblivion gate and they already send out daedra like Xivilai. I leveld up by exploring everything on my way to the main quest, isn´t that a normal thing to do?^^
so you mean I should visit all the mages gilds and get my recommendation to enchant all my stuff?
ManualMakron Apr 29, 2015 @ 11:20pm
Well, the Xivilai are tough opponents no matter what you do. They have a weakness to lightning, resistance to fire and a 33-50% chance to absorb spells ( this includes weapon enchantments ). Your best method to defeat them is physical damage with poisons.
You could go with the mages guild and get all the recommendations to gain access to the Arcane University.. That'll be of much help.

Dude, do yourself a favour and mod the game.

Try this guide: http://wiki.step-project.com/User:Hishutup/OblivionGuide

Do the barebones mods if you're not interested in investing a good 5+ hours into getting the game looking on-par with modded Skyrim.

I'm around 60% in and the game looks absolutely ~fabulous!

I really don´t care about good graphics at all. I liked Morrowind unmodded much more than the modded stuff. Only mods I use are funny little things or armor

Hi. Do you have access to Frostcrag Spire yet? (I'm assuming you have the GOTY version of Oblivion with all the add-ons, including Frostcrag Spire, Battlehorn Castle, and Deepscorn Hollow.)

I'm playing as a Redguard Sorcerer and using the Atronach Altar to summon them at Frostcrag Spire. You just need 3 Void Salts to summon a Storm Atronach, which is the toughest of all summoned Atronachs. You can practice your Restoration, Illusion, and Alteration skills on them by healing, rallying, and shielding them. If you want a Flame Atronach or Frost Atronach, just buy 3 Fire Salts or 3 Frost Salts. I buy them mostly at The Main Ingredient or The Gilded Carafe in The Imperial City Market District. You can also find them occasionally in dungeons or outside forts. They're really helpful in battle, especially when you're fighting groups of enemies.

You can buy all the furnishings for Frostcrag Spire from Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium. She has the fairest prices for alchemical ingredients, too, because she's a novice at Mercantile. I like buying from her if she has what I need because dealing with Claudine Perrick at The Gilded Carafe is a pain in the backside, even when you have a high Mercantile and/or Speechcraft skill. Calindil owns the Mystic Emporium. He also sells scrolls if you're not interested in buying spells from the Mages Guilds.

Hope that helps. :-)

EDIT: You will also have access to an Altar of Enchanting and an Altar of Spellmaking with Frostcrag Spire, so there's no need to get all your Mages Guild recommendations unless you want to. Just buy spells and/or scrolls from Calindil, or buy spells from Edgar at Edgar's Discount Spells. Nilphas Omellian at the Merchants Inn will occasionally have some good scrolls and alchemical ingredients.

I like joining the Mages Guild because you can buy most spells a lot cheaper than repeatedly buying scrolls from other merchants. Good luck!

thanks, I just discovered the frostcrag spire. I forgot about that because I klicked it away during the tutorial (didn´t make sense to me to get quests without someone knowing me XD). But I can´t get in the Mystic Emporium, it´s closed even though every other shop is open.

You're welcome.

The locked door is a glitch. What you need to do is either pick the lock or use a scroll to open the door. I prefer using a scroll because the guards have caught me picking the lock. (If your Security skill is high, you shouldn't have to worry about the guards, but it's easier with a scroll.)

Anyway, once you're inside, Calindil and Aurelinwae will act a bit huffy, but it's easy to raise their dispositions once you've picked the lock to the lower level/basement door. After you get that door open, the store should remain unlocked during business hours (8 AM to 8 PM) even if you start a new game. I think both locks are average. If you have any trouble, post again and I will reply. Good luck!
