The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Crash On Start Up
Everytime I click play it crashes, and I have no mods so I don't know why this would be happening. I only have Knights of the Nine, and the Shivering Isles.

Fixed it, trying deleting the INI file and see what happens.

me too...deleted everything in oblivion folders, then re-install. don't know why it happened though...It all worked fine before, it started fine, everything, I hadn't played much 'cause I couldn't use my controller, then I came back to it yesterday, and poof, nothing. All I needed to do was a save transfer for my x-box, at least I can play it there with controller. Really wish there was a driver for the 360 controller for this game...

This was happening to me earlier; I had previously installed Oblivion and removed it to install this edition since it came with all the DLC for free. I fixed it by deleting 'Oblivion.ini' located in:

C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Oblivion

Or just go to My Documents\My Games and delete your entire Oblivion folder before a fresh install. I'd back-up my saves though if I were you.

Four hours of tweaking and mod-installations later. I think I'm about ready to start a new game!

I've not been able to play Oblivion for a couple years now. I've tried restoring the game from a backup known to work, to reinstalling the game from scratch, throughcomplete Windows reinstalls, and even trying muliple computers and OS's. I simply can't get the game to start - even Vanilla Oblivion with no mods.

The only thing I get a 0xc0000142 crash on startup, which means it could be any number of things crashing the game.

The exact same thing happened to me. What I suggest, is opening up the save files for Oblivion. Start the game, and delete every save file that appears until the game loads. It may take a couple tries, but there is a very large chance that this is the problem causing you grief.

Don't know if this might help or not but I am going to post my experience. I had random crashes at the startup of the game, sometimes it works flawlessly, sometimes it will just CTD, or become unresponding. The solution for my issue was to delete the crappy Bethesda Softworks logo video and a few other sponsor videos that cause issues for me at the startup : Those are the files that I deleted (you can move them to other folder if you don't want to delete them) :

2k games.bik
bethesda softworks HD720p.bik
game studios.bik
Oblivion iv logo.bik
Oblivion Legal.bik

They are located in :\Steam\SteamApps\common\Oblivion\Data\Video . After deleting those crappy videos no more crashes at startup! Not to mention the game starts much faster now.
Keep in mind however this doesn't fix in-game random crashes, but can fix game startup crashes.

Great to hear! I'm glad this was fixed for you.

After my post yesterday I finally managed to get my original install of Oblivion running again - I had a couple .dll's in the main Oblivion folder (dsound.dll), leftovers from when I was using ALchemy with my old, no-longer-installed Sound Blaster Audigy (ALchemy was a poorly-supported program Creative Labs made to attmpted to restore EAX Sound Support for older games in the Post-XP era (Vista and up).

The strange part though, is why my past attempts to even get a clean install to run properly failed on more than one attempt. I remember reading that there was some bad Windows updates back last year sometime that caused some issues with Oblivion. Perhaps I had two separate issues going on?

Too late to the party, but this is what worked for me:

navigate to My Documents/My Games/Oblivion,
delete following files:

BlendSettings.ini
Oblivion.ini
RendererInfo.txt

Good luck!

I had the same issue. I think the problem is with the video settings. Once i disabled HDR under the video settings, it started right up.
