So, if you want to be sure that your savegame wont be given crashes do the following:
a) use the unoffical patches (if you have GOTY just use SI and the DLC patch)
b) clean the mods that needs to be cleaned (with TES4edit)
c) neve use autosave
d) always use manaul save (mod I use is custom_save).
That may be. I don't use any community made mods so I can't vouch for your experience if you do.
What I can tell you is upon this latest install of Oblivion on Windows 7 I had been experiencing the crash on rest/wait/travel every time I tried to rest, wait, or travel. First I disabled the autosaves which fixed the problem but was inconvenient so I re-enabled them and checked the Oblivion.esm master file in the "Data Files" section of the launcher and now the autosave is functioning perfectly; I played a solid four hours last night without a single crash.
Great to hear you play for 4 hours straight :) But as I said - the issue will come sooner or later and its not fun to have 100 hours of gameplay ruined. I would strongly suggest that you didnt play as you are doing now, but thats just a suggestion.
And to go against a collection 9 years of experince with the game is brave, but for us lazy its better not to invent the wheel once again.
Exactly as stated above. I've played Oblivion since it's release and I've been a member of its community for a long time, it's a known issue and it's best avoided by not relying on autosaves or quicksaves of any stort. Just make a new save every time you save and after a couple of hundred of saves, just backup the saves or delete the old ones. This method is the best way to avoid any kind of issues.
Meanwhile I have not experienced a single crash since enabling the Oblivion.esm master file in the "Data Files" submenu of the launcher and I'm not even using the unofficial patch. And I have autosave, which is nice.
(You're crashing because you're using too many community made mods.)
Running here with a +200 hour savegame and +250 mods (mods merged) and I do seldome run into a crash. Its just to follow the guides that has come out of the communites trial and error.
Look, Im not saying that your take is bad in anyway and you should really play it as you want. But to recommend things that goes against what has been tested (with to many countless hours to back it up) with only some few hours gameplay is just away to spread confussion, and thats not so good.
The "fix" I applied is so easy; why wouldn't you try it if you're having problems on vanilla?
Anyway, still no crashes and autosave works. I'll update you if it eventually starts to crash again.
The only time it has crashed subsequent to the change was when Ongar the World-Weary tried to steal a loaf of bread at Olav's in Bruma with about half the town inside watching...
