The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Game crashes while starting
I am so annoyed. I have the original 2007 version which works fine on my laptop. However, I wanted to get the Steam version because the original needs to be played with CD and so Steam is more convenient for me. Whenever I open the launcher and press play, it seems to crash and I find myself back in Steam without any error code or anything. Can anyone help me with it? As the CD version works perfectly fine, I don't see where the problem could be ... thanks!

but you don't own the Steam version; if you did, you'd have a mouse icon next to your username in these forums

I own the Steam and the GOG versions and I am not sure why this happens when launching from Steam either though. I can link the GOG version to Steam and it crashes every time the same way on both versions. It's really weird. Launching the launcher and the the executable while on Steam. This does not happen when just using Galaxy. Ironically it happens the other way around on my Steam Deck.
well for the overwhelming majority of Steam users, we don't get instant CTD when launching TES IV and typically can resolve it with patch mods, verifying game cache, reinstalling game, restarting OS and/or Steam, reinstalling Microsoft components, etc

I just download, it just crashes in any settings i try in the launcher.
windows comes with default security settings. neither steam nor the game installer nor the game make any changes nor bypass whatever antivirus, security settings, folder permissions, running programs you have on your system. up to YOU to manage all that for this game and any other game/app you install.

game launcher needs to create folder
Documents\My Games\Oblivion
folder should contain files BlendSettings.ini Oblivion.ini RendererInfo.txt
after game launcher runs and you set your graphics settings
and after game starts your Saves folder.

if these files are missing
check antivirus log? might be blocking game/game launcher.

check windows security/controlled folder access.
if on add exceptions for game launcher/game.

running Windows One Drive? One Drive moves files out of the Documents folder.
Windows One Drive was released in 2007. VERY many websites with
tutorials/manuals/movies/youtube videos written by experts devoted to
One Drive/synching files/using steam, etc. if you use/need One Drive
consult a tutorial/manual/video and learn how to exclude folders, leave
a local copy of the data, or other options.

if you do not use/need One Drive, disable/uninstall it. One Drive moves
files out of the Documents folder and may affect another app/game.

check windows event viewer and also windows reliability history.
might be a game crash event or system related problems.

2006 game released for 2006 hardware. try monitor=60hz and fps=60 and resolution=1920x1080 to start

mods? can cause all kinds of problems if not installed correctly or conflict with other mods

Oh my god..... I didn't think your post would be helpful but I was wrong. My last save game was dated August 2023 and I haven't been able to launch it since. I've just been playing on Xbox 360/One. But for the last three days I have been trying to troubleshoot the issue and had tried every suggestion possible. Running as administrator, allowing through firewall, deleting mods and all save games, running compatibility modes from Windows 10 all the way back to 95, uninstalling and reinstalling game, etc. Nothing worked. Until I noticed a discrepancy in the file names.

"Documents\My Games\Oblivion
folder should contain files BlendSettings.ini Oblivion.ini RendererInfo.txt"

When I looked at my files I noticed they were labeled simply as BlendSettings, Oblivion, and RendererInfo. I manually changed them to BlendSettings.ini, Oblivion.ini, and RendererInfo.txt. Hit Play on the launcher and (huge sigh of relief) the game launched. Thank you for sharing your post, Cheshirm. I hope others who have had similar issues may find this fix helpful.
in file explorer click view then show then check file name extensions
