Steam Overlay not working with oblivion. RESOLVED
I can't get steam community to run while playing. Yes I have it enabled in my settings and through the properties section of oblivion itself. OBSE won't run because of this and this has caused me endless problems and a lot of wasted time trying to figure out the issue.

Oblivion and my mods were working fine with the overlay running about 5 or 6 days ago I'm not entirely sure. Also the overlay works fine with any other game besides oblivion so I'm really at a loss.

If you could help I would really appreciate it.

TLDR overlay won't run with oblivion though it iss enabled what do?

EDIT: Disabling UAC and running steam as admin allows it to run. Reinstalled Steam to a different directory fixed the problem.

Thanks but no thanks... I am certain I have OBSE installed correctly I've already triple checked that and I know how to enable steam community fairly sure I said that in the original post. The rest of that is rather useless unless you have some explanation as to why and how any of those would help.

I think I have the same problem. Is there a console command that will give OBSE version number, or other information?

THANK YOU OP. You saved me from plenty of gray hairs. Though, I'll just note that I didn't have to disable UAC - simply starting Steam with admin rights fixed the issue.

Thank you mister...I discovered this after trying to run mods on Oblivion for two days. By the way...Borderlands 1 has a similar issue...you can not play online unless you run Steam as Admin.

I just got the Deluxe edition in the sales, and I cannot get steam overlay to work ingame myself. This is preventing me from enjoying mods :( I dont know what the deal is. I am running steam as admin, and running Oblivion as Admin and still no overlay ingame. Ofc I made sure I have steam overlay enabled in steam settings and in the individual game settings. Checked in my Fallout new vegas and steam overlay works there just fine. WTF is going on?

Xal, is your steam installed outside of program files? the User Account Controls or UAC restricts certain things in program files. Basically UAC, Steam and Oblivion don't play nice together which prevents the overlay from working. To test if this is the issue, google how to disable UAC for your version of windows and then try playing the game. If the overlay runs then you have to reinstall steam to something like C:\Steam and redownload everything. If you have a save file you want to keep be sure to make a copy and store it somewhere safe. If this isn't your problem, then I don't know it could be any number of things and you should try opening your own thread if you haven't already.

my steam is installed to a folder on my desktop. I disabled UAC the day i bought my pc heh. still no idea whats causing this :(

I have found a temporary fix for this but I would still like to get Steam overlay working in oblivion if anyone can think of a fix. For now to play with mods I found a couple old links to an older obse_launcher.exe that seems to allow obse to work even without the steam overlay.

And just to be clear, steam overlay was not working for a clean install of oblivion with no mods or any tampering.
