The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

OBSE will not load, in game overlay not working.
I am finally getting a new monitor and I'm wanting to go back and play some stuff, and having not played Oblivion in three years it's a game thats near the top of the list. Unfortunately, despite not having changed anything in my Oblivion folder in that time, OBSE will not load when I run the game (as soon as I load a save / start a new game I get multiple warnings about it and one mod forcibly closes the game), and for some reason Steam's in game overlay isn't working either.

I've seen a post referring to Creative's Alchemy program, but the .dll the guy mentioned isn't in my Oblivion folder. I've also seen a post mentioning using a different version of the OBSE launcher, but the game won't start with it (gives me an application load error, the same one if I just try to run Oblivion.exe in its installation folder).

Anyone have any suggestions short of reinstalling the game? Don't really wanna reinstall it right now since its such a pain to get all the mods working.

I am not 100% sure how it works, but If your ingame overlay is not working you have to use OBSE 21 and launch the game a different way.

You can't launch the game by clicking the game in Steam. I can't tell you how to do it since I am not having a problem with OBSE 20 and my overlay is working.

Maybe someone else can explain how to launch the game using OBSE 21 or you can do a search for it to find out how to launch the game using the OBSE loader.

IM pretty sure I was using OBSE 20, I downloaded and tried using 21 but the same problem occurs.

it worked smoothly before and you touched nothing and now it doesn't work anymore? that's really strange... did do the obse installation for the steam version of the game?

Install the following loader into your oblivion folder, and use it to launch the game. Leave all the other OBSE21 files in there too.

As I said in my first post, I tried using the OBSE loader and all I get is an application load error, as if I tried to just run Oblivion.exe from its install folder.

Put the OBSE loader.exe into your game fodler. And then start Oblivion from Steam. That is how I get this solution to work.

No dice, now it seems that something I've done has caused the game to not even get past the initial load screen, it freezes there before I even get to the menu with or without the loader.exe being in the folder.

I just loaded up Fallout New Vegas to see if the same thing was happening there, and it is, NVSE isn't loading.

You havent toched the game in 3 years so things can have changed for you - ie new gfx drivers and so on. There is not so much info in this thread that can help you solve the problem so here is som rather straight forward questions that can narrow down the problem (dont take them as rude, we are all here to help. its just easier to structure the questions like this):
a)could you take screenshots of the warnings you are getting?
b) what mods are you using?
c) have you installed the game in programfiles(x86)?
d) have you tried obse v.19 or older?
e) is there any dll´s inside data/OBSE/plugins that shouldnt be there?
f) used boss to sort your load order?
g) delete the oblivion.ini inside documents/mygames/Oblivion and let the game create a new one?
h) tried to play the game in windowed mode?
g) what kind of audio card do you have? The Dsp Mode in Asus called "GX" should not be enabled (that was a problem for me awhile)

A) The error Steam gives me is "Application load error 5:0000065434" if I try to run obse_loader.exe. The errors in game are just about OBSE not running.

B) Shouldn't be relevant, as they shouldn't cause OBSE to not load.

C) Yes, it's installed there, which is where Steam is installed. However, I moved it with one of the programs that moves Steam games to other folders / drives (before Steam allowed you to select where you wanted it installed). This caused no problem the last time I played.

D) No, not one prior to v20, which is what I was using last.

E) Not that I am aware of.

F) No, its the same as I played three years ago, and shouldn't affect OBSE loading.

G) I don't see how this would affect OBSE.

H) No, but FONV was in windowed mode when I tried it earlier and it didn't load NVSE either.

G) Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional

I would like to take the time to bump this and also state that i recently purchased the Deluxe GOTY edition and even with OBSE removed from my Oblivion i still do not get a steam overlay. I have tried all that was stated above and have searched the net trying what few "fixes" that have been suggested to no avail.

backing up what Pharnham said, read this post and follow the link in there as well for even more info. This is an easy-to-do work around solution and it worked well for me. FYI to all - most crashes or FREEZERAY!s at launch are caused by a corrupt/broken oblivion.ini file
His Divine Shadow May 22, 2014 @ 12:59am
Yeah, still doesn't work for me. However the version of the loader packaged with OBSE 17a gives me a different error message, it tells me that it is an unknown version of Oblivion.
[CRG] Ghost™ May 22, 2014 @ 1:35pm
what version of Oblivion do you have? It needs to be 1.2.0416 (lower left corner of main menu screen when running in fullscreen mode) Have you deleted your old oblivion.ini file? I had an issue where as I was trying different versions of OBSE one of them changed my *.ini file and then when I switched back to obse loader v17.2 Oblivion wouldnt work properly. Or maybe you have to start fresh with a new install of Oblivion - dont forget to manually delete the old *.ini file when/if you do this, Steams 'Delete Local Content' won't do that part for you.

I know this is an old thread but I was having the same problem described by His Divine Shadow (with the error number and such). The solution (for me) was to uninstall the Unofficial Oblivion DLC Patch. The OBSE now works with all my mods. For reference, this is the patch I'm referring to: http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/9969/?

Hopefully this helps someone out there that needed it.

I had that same mod installed, i uninstalled it, deleted the Oblivion.ini and tried relaunching the game, still comes up with "Application load error 5:0000065434". I tried all the above fixes as well, still no-go. :/

EDIT: I restarted Steam and it seems to work now. Thx for the tip!
