The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Game got really hard all of a sudden?
Right, been playing with no mods, as I don't really like mods in games, but the levelling is kind of stupid in this game, and there are already monsters at level 13, who take 50 hits to go down, while there are enemies in the same area who die in 4 - 5 hits. Are there any mods or cheats I should utilize to make this game a bit more bearable? Only solution I've found so far is to lower the difficulty, which has made the game too easy.

There's no real need to level up if you don't want to. You can easily complete the main quest on at just level 2. So you only need to level up as high you want to.

Overhaul mods such as OOO or FCOM have better leveling. OOO is much harder than the base game. I am sure there are others on the Nexus.

Thanks, I'll check these out, was thinking about getting OOO, but it did seem harder.

Or maybe the ones who take so many hits to go down is because they have resistances? If you're trying to take out a will-o-the-wisp or a troll or a clannfear with an iron sword, for example, you're probably going to die.

Same types of enemies, except suddenly, a harder version shows up. Grummite Beaters, and then a Grummite Torturer, Torturer deals lots of damage, takes lots of damage and is p. hard. Grummite Beaters maybe 5 hits, and don't deal that lots of damage, p. easy.

Grummites are just damage sponges in general.
You should really do Shivering Isles really early (as in level 1-2) or really late (level 25+) to make it easier for you.
Too late, already done with the Felldew Chalice and conspiracy things.

There's another trick to levelling, your major and minor skills will get bigger bonuses when you choose which to upgrade gaining levels. Meaning if you are a fighter, your strength will get a bigger bonus than sneak for instance. This only happens if you train that skill, so waiting to gain a level will help you get a bigger bonus if you plan it right, make sure you are training the skills you chose for your class.

Got the +5 attributes mod, because it kinda seems unfair to newer players tbh.
when i first played vanilla Oblivion i got owned (by a scamp) it's a much harder game (in my view than Skyrim) i learn't to get Smithing up as quickly as possible (repair over 100) and Alchemy can be very usefull (poisons)...failing that....run into the water

So far, I've just wasted mana and potions in hopes of surviving, and then if I die, I retry until I succeed. I also think cheats are more acceptable in Oblivion thanks to the difficulty, so I use cheats sometimes now.

Make sure you have proper gear for your level(bandit and vampire dens are good sources) and try to focus skill and attribute increases. If you are still having trouble then learn Soul Trap, grab Azura's Star, and use Sigil Stones to enchant your gear.
also get Wabbajack...turns a goblin berserker into a rat...or the other way around

Yes this game is very hard if you've been playing the game without caring about optimal levelling like i am, a mountain lion can solo you very easily, i'm level 19 and get destroyed by mountain lions as all i've done so far are dark brotherhood, thieves guild , mages guild quests and my blade and destruction magic are very low, killing one lion would take about a minute of non stop swinging with my best weapon and i'd be dead long before that, therefore i just brewed myself a ♥♥♥♥ load of invisibility potions.

At least they fixed this issue in Skyrim/FNV
