The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

leveling and enjoying the game
Having a litttle bit of trouble with leveling. How do you do the 5/5/5 max level bonus. It seems that concentrating on that, takes alot of the enjoyment of the game. Most of my skills are based upon agility and speed. My character is built upon stealth tactics, and lockpicking, with a balance of strength and willpower based skills.

Is the 5/5/5 really that important? Or should i just play the game and enjoy it?

I don't find it at all important. Some people like grinding out their skills to get three 5's every level. I've never had a problem with the enemies' scaling if I get 2's 3's and 4's. I'd just rather play and enjoy. Anyway, skill level (and fatigue and base weapon damage and weapon condition etc) are way bigger factors in how much damage you do than your attribute. I think people can blow these things out of all proportion. Play and enjoy.

Read this and probably come away more confused.
What you are trying to do is called Effecient Levelling or EL. Well, STOP. when you become an expert in oblivion you can worry about it. for now just enjoy.
When I first started to play I become fustrated as well but once I realized I did not need to EL the game became fun. Just keep your difficulty low if you need to.
At some point you may want to EL with another character, you can but it will suck some fun out of the game no matter how good you are at it. Someday you might want to look into a mod to help you in the leveling difficulties but for now enjoy yourself.

This.

In my first, 10 hours or so I was particularly focused on my levelling to the point where the game got boring because I couldn't get into it. I said ♥♥♥♥ it and started a new run where I didn't really care (But cared enough to level the skiils that I actually use) and it's much more fun now. Of course this may mean that the later game will hurt for me but hey, if I can survive the early game, I should be good enough for the late game.

I suggest using efficient leveling early on when it is the easiest to do and worry less about it later after you've gained several levels.

Get your strength and endurance up or you're probably going to get rekt when enemies out level you.

You can probably find a mod that changes the leveling system so it is more casual.

I've never had this problem, with or without mods. The worst are the Goblin Warlords because they have an insane amount of levelled hit points. But honestly by the time you run into them you should have ways of knocking that down. If you're taking on a Goblin Warlord with an unenchanted poison-free iron longsword, you deserve what you get.

Thanks iwaloa, itis4u, delta 1038, dexter...

Guess my next step, is to nominate , the giant rat; into the most annoying MOB, hall of fame.

Most games use the giant rat, as the intro mob. But these things are really annoying. I hate them

Efficient leveling really isn't that bad. Doing a run on normal difficulty using EL and I've done very little grinding.

The way I'm enjoying the game is just to relax about leveling up. If I'm ready to level up, I don't do it until I feel the game is starting to become too easy and/or I'm ready to encounter new enemies and cooler items. 'Cause leveling in this game really just means you're leveling up the world around you. Your own skills are going to go up regardless.

Of course I should add I only started enjoying the game once I chose a big dumb sword-and-shield Nord to play as. I feel like combat in Oblivion favors that type of character much more than a spellcaster with very little physical strength.

I partially agree. I was just using a h2h no armor mage. of course I custom made a protection spell that gave me better defence than heavy armor could have. I started out by making one for 20 than 30 and so on.
I then punch them to victory. Alot of times I would knock them out only to have them get up before I could finish them off. Any other magic after the shield spell was out of the question as I had no magicka left and hoped it would recover in time to cast another. lets just say I hate magicka damaging effects on me now.

use difficulty slider to play as you want. lower it a little and move on. :)

Rats are your friend.

They are the best enemy to level up armor and blocking with. One rat to start off with and when your armor skill is high enough or you have potions and spells to counteract the damage 3 or 4 rats at the same time.

You can gain 10 skill ups in armor or block within a relatively short time using several rats.

It isn't that important to get +5 every level up. Getting a +3 every level on 3 attributes is steady and will result in all attributes pretty much maxed by the time you hit max level. However, keep in mind that each attribute has a bigger bonus depending on which skills you leveled up per level.
