The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Face bug that's been driving me crazy for over a decade
In the original Launch version of the game the bug didn't exist. Couldn't finish Clavicus Vile's Shrine without the game crashing, but at least their faces were symmetrical. What I noticed is that later versions of the game one eye on every NPC including you is slightly bigger and the other eye is slightly higher on their face.

No one has ever talked about this that I can tell and none of the patches (Both official and unofficial) fix it. and I'm seriously questioning if this is an actual bug or if my brain is seeing something that isn't actually there. Perhaps the Textures themselves are playing tricks on me?

I have no idea but facegen in Oblivion editor does have an option to make asymmetry and many NPCs have various grades of face asymmetry (usually outcasts and such).
Indeed one's perception of human face may depend on state of mind and knowledge of human anatomy. I personally started noticing asymmetry more with age but I'm a painter and that's kinda part of my profession

Would be better if you took a screenshot

Honestly didn't think I'd have too... It's literally every single face, even Dremora the handful of times the camera actually zooms in on them. One eye always looks higher up on everyones faces and one eye always looks Bigger.

Always noticed it, but since no one else ever mentioned it I just assumed it was the Textures playing tricks on me. It's subtle, but once you notice it you can't ignore it.

Even shows up on other people's live-streams and videos. Pretty much every single video/image of the game running any version of the game post-launch has the same visual bug but no one ever mentions it.

The only fix I've ever found for it was running that better heads mod. But, that Mod is extremely common so that may be why no one has ever noticed the face bug.

I mean I see it on some NPCs but not the others so at least what I'm seeing is not a bug.
Martin Septim's eyes for example are pretty symmetrical

So you at least see it? I'm not going crazy then? lol
I was just wanting to know if other people noticed it or if my brain was just weird and processing the faces slightly different from everyone else. lol
It boggles my mind how seemingly no one has ever even mentioned it. It's not a big deal or anything, but it's there, you can see it. None of the patches even mention it.

This annoys me too. One of the things I was thrilled about when the original version was just released was the ability to make my character look just the way I wanted him to look.
Gosh, I probably spent several hours at the final gate in the sewers just trying out various facial combinations until I was able to get my face looking just right!

Now, no matter what I do my left eye is higher on my face than my right. There are mods to modify body sizes and shapes, but I haven't found one to fix the face.

That Better Heads mod, don't know the name off the top of my head but you probably know exactly what mod I'm talking about, it "fixes" the issues by giving you new heads and Face-Gen all together, but I don't know of anything that fixes this bug let alone even acknowledges it.

This game came out in 2007 or 2006, modding was pretty bare-bones back then and mostly filled with people learning from trial and error. Could be it's not an easy problem to fix and those that could either never noticed or were always running Better Heads and didn't know it existed?

That Better Heads mod,

Thanks. I'm going to look for that - or something like it.
I'm sort of a fanatic about the look of my characters in RPGs.

You aren't crazy, OP. I noticed it, too. There's an asymmetry setting in the construction set. If it wasn't like this in the original release, one of the patches probably added it.

I don't think I have my original install disks anymore so I can't verify on a clean, non-updated game if it was or wasn't always like this, though.

Uneven eyes and the infamous googly eye glitch has been with this game since it first came out.
It could sometimes be fixed using "patched bash" in Wrye Bash or usually by using mods like OCO (Oblivion Character Overhaul).

I don't remember it in the console launch version.. It had it's own host of problems, some of the quests just wouldn't work at all (Makes me question whether or not Testers have ever done their job in the industry.) but I remember the Faces being.. Well, more even.

I had the console version at release (the rated t collectors edition) and put thousands of hours into it , and I distinctly remember that the mage you fight in leyawin recommendation quest who took the chicks amulet had a very messed up asymmetrical face. I also remember a guy in the imperial city who looked like an oompa loompa with orange skin and white hair that had an asymmetric face. So I think it was always a thing to some degree.

Agree to Disagree. I don't see the face bug and this is the exact NPC you were talking about

Face asymmetry is a common thing in real life, too, so the feature itself is clearly intentional, however the fact that player character has uneven eyes doesn't seem normal. So there is something wrong with how this feature is applied
