The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Skyrim Fan Trying to Enjoy Oblivion
Hey guys,

First things first, the first Elder Scrolls game I have ever played was Skyrim, so I apologize to all of you diehards out there for not swearing by Morrowind or whatever. I recently bought Oblivion, mainly because I had read so many forum threads saying that all of the faction quest lines were done far better in Oblivion. I really want to get into this game, but I'm having a really hard time of it. Here are some of the issues I'm having, and you can tell me if they're just something I'll have to get used to, or if I'm doing something wrong.

1) I ran around the Imperial City for like an hour and couldn't find anything really interesting to do. The only quest I got is Imperial Corruption. I tried to join the Fighter's Guild, but was sent to a different city so that I could simply join the faction. It seems to me that in Skyrim, talking to random NPC's will inevitably net you some interesting quests. In Oblivion, everyone seems super generic and most of the "rumors" are just advertisements for various shops. Where are all of the good quests that Oblivion is supposed to be famous for?

2) What the hell is with disposition? Can you only rotate that damn circle one time per conversation? Am I just going to have to cheat in a bunch of gold and bribe everybody?

3) I don't think this one can be helped, but the faces. Oh my God, the faces. Why did they think that ratios of facial features were a good way to create characters? Half of the NPC's I meet make me think I'm playing in a weird resolution because their faces look squished ridiculously.

4) Are there any carriages to take me to cities?

5) Is anything in this game as good as the Dark Brotherhood questline, because after playing this game for awhile, it seems like this is really the only cool thing about it.

Apologies if it sounds like I'm hating. I really really want to like this game, and I really want another amazing experience like the one I had with Skyrim. Any advice would be appreciated.

See this is why we know you've played skyrim first. In addition, this game came out 2006, comparing to Skyrim(2011). Another thing, use google, and when it sends you to another city, GO TO THAT DAMNED CITY
1. Go to other city's, Buildings,Shops, Anywere else really their's quests EVERYWERE. If you can't find one Make one, Find a house that you want and buy it can't buy it? Their's a Cave outside And i think their's goodies in it.
2.It's used for getting people to tell you things/ Get better prices, To be honest it's useless.
3.Yeah..... 2006 Graphics but it makes up with it's gameplay.
4.No but you can walk to city's or fast travel or Steal a horse (I'm sure no one will notice)
5.Theif's Guild, Mages Guild and some of the misc quests are pretty good.

I think the only reason i like it is because i grew up with it :).

Also you might want to try modding. Nexus is a Good site to look for mods.

Its a simple thing really, you can't go backwards in this series very well. Some people can play the older ones and find them good, but never as great as those of us who played them back when they were new. People who talk about how great these games are/were are those who knew them back then. You'll probably never enjoy the game as much as we did. The key is to stop comparing it to skyrim. To really love it as it is, you need to treat it as if there is no Skyrim. Its hard, nearly impossible, but I know of a friend who managed to see how awesome it is, even morrowind. But chances are you just won't get the same experience. I'm sorry to say that, but thats just how it is.
should have started on morrowind or oblivion...
now you cant have fun, also just do the main story line first or dark bro hood
1) When you exit the prison tutorial you are told you can do what you want, but if you want to follow the story so you have something to do until you figure things out you need to go to Weynon Priory to deliver the amulet which is part of the main quest.

Fast travel to Chorrol. You can join the Fighters Guild and Mages Guild there. Go to the tavern and talk to the drunk Reynald Jemane for the first in a series of three quests the last of which rewards you with a very good sword.

4) Once the quest is active exit Chorrol and head to Weynon Priory to talk to Jauffre to progress the main quest and obtain some armor, weapons, and a horse for travelling.

Go to Cheydinhal to talk to Reynalds lookalike. Talk to people to find him and he will run to Chorrol. Then go to the Fighters guild to accept a contract. You will be given 3 weapons. Don't deliver them right away. They are quest items which means they are weightless so they will help you until you are stronger since they wonlt count against your max encumberance. Use these weapons until you find something better or use them as backups since they don't count against your weight limit.

2) You don't really need to use the speechcraft minigame much early on although you may need to use it for one of the Mages Guild recommendation quests.

The mini game is really easy once you figure it out. Two of the four directions will increase disposition and two will lower it. The trick is to find the two that increase it and use the larger two pieces to get big boosts in disposition and use the smaller pieces on the two that decrease it so it decreases disposition by only a small amount. If you do things right you will increase your disosition with the NPC.

3) If the faces are a problem download the mod Oblivion Character Overhaul version 2. It makes everyone look incredible imo.

If you want to make the game look good, create an account and download a few mods from

http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/?

Here are the mods I recommend for graphic improvement. If there are to many for you, try the first 3 or 4 if possible.

Qarls Texture Pack 3
Oblivion Character Overhaul V2 +Blockhead (2 files)
Verdant Anthesis the Imperial Ecology V3 + Ecology for a mad god (2 files)
Insanity's Improved Armoury Compilation v1.21

Unique Lanscapes Compilation
Natural Environments + RD Natural Weather Unoffical Test Fix (2 files)
Landscape Retexture + Landscape Retexture Shivering Isles by Lugian (2 files)
Armored Skeletons
Mystic Creatures
Elven Map Redux
Elven Map for Shivering Isles
Darnified UI

Insanity's Armoury must be downloaded from http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/files/ which requires membership too, otherwise just use the mod called Better Looking Armor which can be found on the nexus.

You will need OBMM and OBSE. I also recommend using the 3 unoffical patches, Stutter Remover, Fast Exit and the 4GB patch.

There are also several mods that improve the sounds of the game.

Agar Varied Spell Sounds + Quieter Varied Spell Sounds, if they are to loud for you.
More Immersive Sound Edited
Oblivion Stereo Overhaul
Sounds of Cyrodiil
Symphony of Violence
Combat Sounds 300

Countless other mods to improve the game including guild expanded quests and others.

5) All the guild quests are pretty good. Once you are a higher level the Shivering Isles and KOTN quests are really good too.

Folllow the main quest slowly, there are side quests in every city but some will only be availible as you level. Oblivion is a bit more intellectually challenging than Skyrim. It is definatly worth a playthrough.
1. The Imperial City's interesting quests either require you to have developed a name for yourself (meaning you must go somewhere else) or have found certain objects (which again means you must go elsewhere), the Imperial city is a good place to sell things, and the sewers can be interesting to explore (but can be annoying if you get lost or run into a dead end, there is an odd issue down there, the quest markers generated in the sewers generally point to an exit that is behind a door that is locked because it is quest related).

2. It's not that hard once you learn how it works.

3. There are mods for that.

4. You can fast travel to all cities from the beginning of the game using the map, you do not need to "discover" the city first.

5. Try the Thieves guild, you must be able to steal things (not kill and take, steal, killing your marks is not allowed, being seen is, therefore highly discouraged). The Mages and Fighters guilds get interesting near the end and net you a few unique artifacts. The Shivering Isles is one of the most interesting places that any game has ever allowed players to visit.
1: There's plenty of quests in the imperial city, you just need to talk to the right people. I know there's loads of npcs that don't give quests right away, but they may be linked to other quests. Talk to shop owners etc. And when that fails do main quest or explore a new town or something :).

2: Disposition in basically how much people like you, higher number=more liked lower number=less liked. Moving around the wheel to different things (like boast, joke, etc.) will give you different reactions from the npc, they will smile, barely smile, frown or barely frown. Pick the largest yellow spot on the smiles and the small yellow spots on the frowns. It's hard to explain, but you'll get used to it and once you do you'll win about 90% of each persuasion.

3: Oh yes the faces can be helped. Check out these 2 mods.

I personally preffer the first one but most people like the second.

4: Who needs a carriage to go to a city!? You can just fast travel there :) All cities are automatically discovered for you when you start. (unless your using a mod that disables them, like oscuro's oblivion overhaul.)

5: There are plenty of good quests. The dark brotherhood definitely is fun because you get to kill people, and in special ways. But there are many others, try mages guild, fighters guild thieves guild... I don't wanna say anymore, half the fun in oblivion is discovering things on your own (even though those quests aren't exactly hidden). And when all else fails and you get bored. Do the main quest! x) Then you at least unlock (Oh wait that would be a spoiler).

Oblivion definitely isn't the same game as Skyrim, but I personally preffer it over Skyrim. I hope you start having more fun with it, it'll always be one of my favorites :).

Also check out some other mods if you want. There's many good ones out there.

Kinda mixed up my words there, my favorite face mod is the second one I listed, OCO 1.
I prefer the faces in OCO2 (and that's the one I'm using) but I kind of hate the 'improved' hairstyles it has (well, I assume they're meant to be improved) - not that vanilla hair is great, but some of the OCO2 ones are horrible. What's the hair like in OCO1?
Try Daggerfall you'd love it.

1. i. The Arena ii. Explore the Sewers iii. Thieves Guild, Thieves Guild, Thieves Guild. iv. Get your Fame up and do the Order of The Virtuous Blod. V. Stay a night in the Bloated Float in the Waterfront and fight pirates. VI. Mercantile mischief in the Market by speaking to Jensine about Thoronir. VII. (Not Technically Imperial City, buuuut) run through the Aeylid Ruin right outside of the sewer exit from when you first escaped the prison. Find statue. Find Umbacano Manor (Or sell to a mercahnt and wait) become Indiana Jones.

2. I know, I know. Disposition in Morrowind and Oblivion was a broken system. Ya just gots ta deal with it, buddah.

3. Yeah it's a pain.

4. No.

5. I have two words for you. SHIVERING ISLES. If you've played Oblivion without visiting the Isles, you haven't fully experienced the game. The visuals alone (Especially in Mania and within that, Bliss) are well worth it. Especially at night.

Oh, and go to Chorrol, talk to the Argonian Shopkeep or her daughter (She'll find you and talk to you) wait a bit, talk to shopkeep again, experience the Lovecraftian wonder that is Shadow Over Hackdirt.

I'm pretty sure all the hair is vanilla in OCO1, but not sure since I haven't played without OCO1 in a long time. OCO2 is nice too I just like OCO1 more because it doesn't change everything as drastically as OCO2.
